Today we’d like to introduce you to Karese DeHaan.
Hi Karese, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, my name is Karese and I am the owner and floral experience creator at Detailed Floral Design. Chances are you’ve never met anyone else named Karese. My parents designed my name beginning with the New Testament Greek word for ‘grace’, which is ‘charis‘. Then they personalized it a little and came up with Karese. My approach to wedding floral design is as uniquely personal as my name. I am creative, detailed, honest, dependable, and tirelessly dedicated. Through my life there have been seasons of joy and many other seasons of loss. Through each and every season, Jesus has been my rock and my sustainer.
It is my joy to get to know each bride we serve and hear their stories to create memorable experiences that go beyond stunningly beautiful flowers and last a lifetime.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When my only brother was 19 years old, he passed away in a car accident. My relationship with my parents was changed and my perspective on life was changed. I was told over and over there would be a ‘new normal’ but I did not want a ‘new normal’; I wanted my brother back. Through the pain and heartbreak, God never left me. He carried me through my darkest nights and brought me back to beautiful days. A couple years later, I launched Detailed Floral Design, understanding much more about what matters in life and how to truly love and serve others with all I have today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create personalized, curated experiences for couples who desire lush, timeless wedding flowers in Temecula. I focus on only a few weddings each season and I am dedicated each of our exclusive couples. Generosity is one of our core values and I live this out by investing my time and talent in our couples’ experience and their florals. Through the planning process, I take time pray for every couple. I pray they will have wisdom and peace while planning their big day and that their new marriage is blessed with joy, laughter and an ever-deepening faith.
Also, our proceeds support nonprofits locally and internationally. In 2021, we have already found three opportunities to give back. We support doctors in Malawi, Africa as they tirelessly teach remote villages about preventative health and COVID. We provide meals and education for a young girl in Ecuador. And in February we donated bouquets and a floral installation to support cancer patients and their families in our community. This year is far from over and our next big venture is to launch @TemeculaFlorists and @SanDiegoFlorists. This is a completely free resource for couples to connect with local florists. Each couple has their own style and priorities for their wedding day and likewise, each florist has their own specialty. I am very excited to offer this new community resource to help couples find their perfect florist.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
God has truly blessed me. I don’t think luck has much to do with my experiences when I look back at the perfectly orchestrated steps. That might be surprising to hear from a wedding florist after the past year of COVID restrictions and business closures. But looking back, I see several ‘divine coincidences’ like the day I bought a camera off Craigslist to take photos of our florals.
As it turned out, the woman selling her old camera is a very talented wedding photographer. Sitting in Starbucks selling and buying a camera listed on Craigslist, we started a new friendship. Just a few months later, we collaborated to create the most beautiful bridal photoshoot at Avensole Winery. Her name is Kristna Yorks, and all the photos here were taken by her! I feel peace knowing God is in control and working behind the scenes even when I am unaware.
