Rising Stars: Meet Kyra Nicole of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Nicole.

Hi Kyra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m from a small town in Chesapeake, Virginia — the kind of place where everyone dreams of leaving, but most people stay because it’s familiar and comfortable. I always knew I wanted a little more for myself.

From 2017 to 2019, I worked as a henna artist outside a beachfront piercing studio, eventually moving to the front desk where I handled aftercare, prepped supplies, and managed appointments. Piercing was always in the background of my day-to-day, and even though the piercer offered to train me, I wasn’t ready.

Later in 2019, I joined another tattoo and piercing shop, originally hoping to become a tattoo artist. I started at the front desk, but because I picked things up quickly, they shifted me into a piercing apprenticeship, and that’s when everything clicked. I fell in love with the craft, the clients, the atmosphere, and the anatomy behind it all. It became something I wanted to master.

Not long after, I was offered a position at a studio in San Diego that doubled my income and gave me my own booth. I held a yard sale, sold most of my belongings, packed up my snake and my dog, and drove across the country in two days to start fresh. That move pushed me in ways I never expected, but it opened every door I’d been hoping for. That leap took me out of my comfort zone and into the life I’d always wanted.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. My biggest struggle was finding a studio that felt like the right fit — professional, safe, and still fun. It took a few tries at different shops, but each one taught me what I wanted. Now I can finally say I’ve found my home at Pixley’s Oddities.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a professional piercer who specializes in child and infant piercings, and I’m known for my freehand techniques and the calm, safe environment I create for every client. What I’m most proud of is offering an experience that’s welcoming, educational, and genuinely tailored to each individual.

My dedication to learning has opened the door to some unique projects — including placing an RFID implant for a client who wanted the ability to unlock their home and car with a simple wave of their hand. It was a memorable experience that highlighted the range of work I get to do. (Video on my Instagram page)

I also offer needle play sessions, which are a form of temporary body art using sterile, single-use needles to create designs, patterns, or a controlled sensory experience. It’s done safely and intentionally. It allows people to explore body modification in a creative and meaningful way.

Ultimately, what sets me apart is the heart I put into this craft. From little ones getting their first earrings to clients exploring more advanced body modification, I’m dedicated to making every appointment safe, smooth, and truly meaningful.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think my success comes from genuinely caring about my work and being meticulous with every detail. Precision matters, but so does the experience — making sure clients feel comfortable, supported, and confident. Those qualities together have helped me build trust and deliver work I’m proud of.
