Today we’d like to introduce you to Landon Bergenthal
Hi Landon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began strength training at the age of twelve and started wrestling at thirteen. During these formative years, training became my anchor, helping me stay disciplined amid the chaos in my life. After high school, following the passing of my father, I moved to San Diego to attend San Diego State University (SDSU), pursuing a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology while following my passion for mixed martial arts (MMA).
In 2015, I graduated summa cum laude from SDSU, balancing bartending to support myself while also training and competing in martial arts. Following graduation, I obtained several certifications in personal training, allowing me to work professionally in the fitness industry. Over more than five years of working with hundreds of clients in large commercial gyms, I noticed a widespread lack of credible instruction. This realization drove me to launch Ronin Academy in May 2022.
Ronin Academy now provides expert services in strength training, nutrition, and martial arts to clients of all experience levels across San Diego County.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Before launching Ronin Academy, I worked as an employee at a large commercial gym in Solana Beach, managing a highly successful client base. One day, I arrived at work only to find out that the gym had been sold—completely blindsiding me. Faced with the decision to either relocate and leave my clients behind or start something new, I chose the latter. In just thirteen days, I launched my first business, secured an ideal nearby studio to continue training my in-person clients, and transitioned them seamlessly.
Looking back, I knew little about entrepreneurship, but taking that leap of faith was the best decision I ever made. The pressure of knowing the success or failure of the business rested entirely on my shoulders introduced a new kind of challenge—one that fueled both my personal and professional growth. What initially felt like a major setback turned out to be an opportunity in disguise.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in strength training, nutrition coaching, and mixed martial arts. I hold certifications in personal training, strength and conditioning, nutrition coaching, corrective exercise, performance enhancement, and behavioral change. I also have a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with a fitness specialist emphasis. As a mixed martial artist, I’m proficient in boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Known for providing evidence-based, practical advice, I pride myself on practicing what I preach. I train daily, embodying the same discipline and dedication that I instill in my clients, ensuring I lead by example.
What I’m most proud of is the positive impact I’ve had on troubled youth and high-risk health populations. Oftentimes, a small shift in direction can lead someone to a completely different destination.
What truly sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to integrity. I’ve dedicated the majority of my life to gaining the knowledge and experience to become an exceptional trainer—not a marketer. Too often, I’ve seen trainers overpromise and underdeliver. My priority is to provide the highest level of service while maintaining transparency and integrity with every client I work with.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Instead of seeking out a formal mentor, focus on asking thoughtful questions to those you look up to. In my experience, successful individuals often enjoy helping others because they’ve received help themselves along the way. Don’t let the fear of looking foolish hold you back. Remember, everyone feels awkward when learning something new—including the person you’re asking for guidance. Sometimes, a simple question can lead to a cup of coffee, and from there, mentorship can evolve naturally.
Surround yourself with people you admire. Set your ego aside and actively seek out those with more experience to learn from them. Share your ideas, show humility, and be open to constructive criticism.
In my career training hundreds of clients, I’ve been fortunate to meet many people I admire. I’ve asked countless questions about life, entrepreneurship, and success. I’ve also had the privilege of working and training alongside many talented, hardworking individuals, and our shared conversations have provided invaluable learning experiences.
