Rising Stars: Meet Laura Arumugam

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Arumugam.

Hi Laura, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello, it all started way back when I was around 12 years old. I convinced my parents to let me model. But then I stopped for a while for school. When I was only 19 and pretty uncertain what I wanted to do, I felt something. I just had a calling, telling me I needed to give modeling another try, but seriously this time. And I am so glad that I did. I have been modeling ever since! I have had the opportunity to work for brands in many different cities and meet unique people from all over. I have learned a lot about fashion, beauty, skincare, and even technology from for modeling for all kinds of brands such as Bloomingdales, Coach, MAC, and Apple to name a few!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Since the start, I quickly learned the road I chose wouldn’t be bumpy, but rather like a cyclone roller coaster. There were incredible times, and doubtful ones. At this point, I’ve learned that I would not be who I am if it weren’t for all of my experiences. At the end of the day I am thankful I was able to have them. Some of the hardest parts about modeling include rejection, challenging beauty standards, and uncertainty. I faced many challenges with being the perfect image to book jobs. Also my agent telling me I’m booked for a job and then at the last minute hearing the client has changed their mind, is pretty hard to process. There’s not much predictability in my industry either, so it’s essential to work hard, be persistent, and stand out.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am both a full time full model and content creator. I have been told I have a very diverse look which has helped me to book a wide range of jobs. I am proud of myself for staying strong in an industry full of discouragement. I try to stand out by just being myself because I personally feel many other models are afraid to do that.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love San Diego because it feels like a perfect mix of city life and beach town vibes. I love how clean and beautiful it is, and everyone just seems friendlier than other cities. The only thing that could possibly be improved in my opinion is the nightlife.
