Rising Stars: Meet Liz Myers of Julian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Myers

Hi Liz, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey began way back when I was a teenager living in Vermont. I was always curious about Psychology and human behavior and I knew that would be a main focus in my life. I pursued a Bachelor degree in Social Work and I went on to earn a Master of Arts in Counseling. Along the way, I noticed a lot of challenges and road blocks within the traditional social work system. I had a hard time not becoming frustrated and burned out by the nature of the profession.
In my 30’s, I was faced with a medical challenge and this provided the catalyst for me to dive deeper into my own healing journey. At that time, I decided to move away from the traditional and I began to explore what we now know as “alternative” therapies.

I began to study and practice meditation, gentle yoga and sound healing. I found these types of therapies to be quite supportive and deeply healing. This had a profound effect on me personally and I decided to pursue these therapies as offerings in my own wellness business. I began first by providing Mindfulness based coaching; incorporating meditative techniques to support people to go inward and connect with their own intuition. The benefits were amazing! As we know, the wisdom is already inside and we just have to make the time to uncover it and let it rise to the surface. As a coach, I was able to support people to put their wisdom into action.

As I practiced restorative yoga and I sang more and more, I began to incorporate these as healing modalities for others as well. I have always loved to sing but it took awhile to find my voice. It took awhile to feel good about sharing my voice with others. I’m glad I stuck with it because now I provide group and individualized deep healing sound sessions. The effects it has on others is quite powerful.
Over the past 6 months, I’ve begun to offer vocal empowerment sessions and these sessions are awesome!! We talk about blockages in the voice and then we sing, chant, hummm and so on. It’s so amazing to see how personal power and authenticity are discovered and restored within my clients. I am very grateful for the service work I get to do with others.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I had quite the obstacle to overcome when I moved from Vermont to San Diego in 2007. I did not realize how big of a difference it would be to move from such a small place to a large city. I was definitely a big fish in a small pond and I had a lot of adjustments to make as I became a small fish in a very large ocean! I love the sunshine and warmth here so it’s more than worth it. And moving to the mountains of Julian just a couple of years ago has made all the difference as well. I get to have that small town feel while knowing the the ocean is just an hour or so away.

It’s also been a tough road at times to stay the course as these therapeutic tools have not always been widely received. However, a lot has changed, especially in the past few years and I believe folks are really starting to understand just how healing meditation, sound, mindfulness and gentle yoga can be. I look forward to staying the path and serving.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I would have to say what sets me apart from others is my voice and my trauma informed training. I have what others refer to as an “otherworldly” or “ancient” voice. I sing at different points throughout my sound healing offerings and that is the instrument that people tend to enjoy the most. Additionally, I take a trauma informed approach to each session and I think that really puts people at ease. They can really feel safe with me.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the ocean, trees and mountains. San Diego is such a beautiful place. I do have a hard time with the busy freeways and the big city. That is one reason why I moved out to the Mountains in Julian. I enjoy the peacefulness of slower roads and one lane driving.
