Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Garcia.
Hi Luis, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Hello, my name is Luis Garcia, I’m originally from Tijuana, Mexico but I lived most of my life in San Diego, CA. When dreams of becoming a professional athlete fail, I turn to photography, went to school for photography, and while studying I met a pair of commercial photographers that invited me to become their photo assistant/studio manager. Spent many years there learning everything about photography and the business of photography while at the same time shooting for myself, finally, around year 10 I took a break from that job and started on my own, the connections made during that time landed me my first travel photo assignment, the rest is history. I’ve been shooting for travel publications, in-flight magazines, and commercial clients in the industry for more that 1o years. This job has taken me to places around the world that I could not imagine, from Patagonia to Alaska and everything in between, still so many countries to visit, and very grateful for all the opportunities given to me.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The business of photography is a constant struggle, so many good photographers out there, you have to promote yourself constantly (something that I need to improve myself on doing more), biggest struggle so far has been the pandemic, most of my work is in the travel industry so when that happened, my work completely stopped. It was a year and half of almost no travel work, luckily, I can also shoot other types photography so I keep sort of busy.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As I mentioned before I specialize in travel photography, I love it because as a travel photographer you also shoot lifestyle, food, interiors, portraits, landscapes. On a typical travel assignment, you usually shoot all of these other types of photography which makes my job really fun. I guess I’m a bit known the most for shooting portraits and food.
Recently I’ve done two travel assignments that I’m very proud of, one was in Alaska and the other one was in South America, both were done in cruise ships, and both will be published next year, can’t wait for those stories to be published, very excited. Next one in Antarctica for a brand-new client!
I think one of the things that sets me apart from others is that I can shoot in very different environments, I’m always quick on adapting to any changes, I can shoot in the studio and on location, and no matter what the assignment is I always give %110 of my effort.
What matters most to you?
My family, my friends, and my health, without them, is very hard to do what I do.
