Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Rockin Guadarrama.
Hi Maggie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Maggie Rockin, I began my non profit organization called “I6NITE” about 10 years ago because I was inspired by my younger brother Michael who is a passionate skateboarder and began skateboarding at a very young age. We now help sponsor skateboarding events in low income communities where the youth love to skateboard but do not have the funds to practice safely.
Even though life forced me to grow up fast, I stayed young at heart. 4 years ago I began a journey to become a better version of myself. I began to go to networking events, read motivational books, stayed away from toxic people, changed my eating habits, and slowly I began to find who “Maggie” truly has always been; but due to life’s turmoils, little Maggie was hiding.
Now that I was on a focused journey and I knew my purpose, I was able to focus on what was needed to be changed in my community, I found a problem in skateboarding merchandise. I began to notice the merchandise was not kid friendly.
As a creator, I made this Rockin Rollie cartoon. I created a story behind the cartoon. I designed kid friendly clothes for children who love to skateboard. I began a toy and plush to go alongside my vision.
A few years ago I met Thomas Dougherty at a local coffee shop and saw him drawing cartoons. After speaking with him, I found that Thomas is on the spectrum and while confidently dealing with his own life’s obstacles. He is super talented and we began a beautiful friendship. He has written and illustrated “Margaret’s Boots”, alongside his brother.
Alongside Thomas, we co-wrote “Yolia Meets Rockin Rollie”. Even thought my father has never skateboarded, his passing in 2022 of cancer impacted my life forever. I implemented this into the story, how Yolia [In Nahuatl (Uto-Aztecan language) means “what makes you live or being reborn”] while coping with the loss of her father, tries to honor her father by continuing a legacy of her passions. Yolia goes through the emotions of life while Rockin Rollie as her sidekick, helps her adjust to life’s hardships through the concepts learned by skateboarding,
“Yolia Meets Rockin Rollie”, is a very unique cartoon story for all ages. I hope with all my heart, this story helps whoever is going through a loss or other obstacle in life, and that you enjoy the book overall! You can now purchase the book online at Barnes and Noble, in English and Spanish. A percentage of all sales will be given back to I6NITE non profit organization.
PS an animation film called “Yolia” and starting Rockin Rollie is in the works!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has been a rocky one. Once you know you want to become a better version of yourself, you will need to put more of your energy into molding yourself. It takes a lot of courage to say no to people that are toxic. You will need to not only change your eating habits, but surround yourself with passionate people and find good mentors to guide you in your process. You will loose people along the way, and you will feel very lonely at times. Most people who grew up with you will not be your immediate cheerleader, on the contrary, they might turn their back on you. This is when you need to embrace loneliness. It’s ok to spend quiet time meditating and relaxing by yourself. It’s better to be alone than to be around people who hurt you.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a creator! I have so much imagination and I can draw cartoons! I love the movies and film. So when I found my passion, I began to put in all my extra time to creating.a film script for Rockin Rollie. I networked. I reached out to talented people with the same energy and passion as myself, and now I have a team who are all working on completing our animation film.
I began Rockin Productions and studios. I now have a new kid friendly skateboarding line and toys, I have a book published and a film coming soon!
