Today we’d like to introduce you to Makayla Wardrip.
Hi Makayla, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
As a little kid, my dad had cameras lying around, and I would make videos of skits I would make up to doing tours of the house as they remodeled it. Into my teenage years, I continued to make videos and post them online. My freshman year of high school at Granite Hills, I decided to take a photography class which is how I got more into photos. From that class, I learned there was a 4-year multimedia pathway, so I joined that. In 2018 after I graduated from high school, I went to Grossmont College, where I majored in Media Communication emphasis in Video Production. That’s when I had the realization, I loved every part of the industry and wanted to do it all! Once I graduated from college, I started my own business, where I was able to do multiple jobs including: photography, videography, and graphic design.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Since I have been doing it for fun as a kid, everything came so easy and natural to me. It never felt like homework or work in general; it always has been so much fun for me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Even though I enjoy more of the videography side of the industry, I am more known for my photography since it has been easier to promote and get paid to do. For the past year, I’ve gotten close to a lot of people in the music scene in San Diego like Roi Bars, The Band Cope, The Miles, and more. It gave me the realization that I really enjoy shooting at concerts and would love to start filming music videos. I’d say what sets me apart from others is how open I am to doing any kind of work, and even if I’m doing it for free, it makes me so happy that money never could compare.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I was still going to college during the pandemic, which was a struggle being in classes that really involves hands-on activities and needing other people for production. I was very lucky compared to my classmates that I have always been so used to having to be creative on my own and being able to film a whole production by myself which made the last few classes spent online a lot easier for me.
