Rising Stars: Meet Maryann Jacobsen of Scripps Ranch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maryann Jacobsen.

Hi Maryann, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a registered dietitian who discovered a love for writing along the way. After having children, I started a blog called Raise Healthy Eaters, which led to speaking engagements, six published books, podcasting, and a variety of freelance opportunities.

As my kids grew and my interests evolved, I shifted my focus to midlife women’s health. Today, I write a weekly Substack and am working on my seventh—and toughest—book, aimed at helping midlife women understand their changing bodies and make nutrition and lifestyle shifts to truly thrive.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I tried for years to get a book deal before it finally happened in 2011. I still remember submitting my first book proposal to countless publishers. When a publisher finally showed interest, they wanted to change the concept so much it barely resembled my original idea.

During that time, I did a lot of freelance writing and followed what other publications wanted me to write about. But when I finally made the decision to focus on my own ideas and my own books, everything shifted.

That said, this business is never easy. It requires self-motivation, flexibility, and a thick skin. You have to keep showing up, day after day, and ride out the ups and downs. You really have to love it—and understand the reality of the work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in midlife women’s health as a registered dietitian and writer. Most of what we hear about this life stage centers on hormonal changes and menopause—but my research has shown me there’s so much more to it than that.

What sets me apart is the depth of my research and my focus on truly helping women understand what’s happening in their bodies. For example, I share a free biomarker guide with my subscribers to help them interpret lab tests and know what to ask their doctors for. I also run challenges on Substack, break down the latest research, and am writing a book to help midlife women understand what to expect at this pivotal life stage.

Many experts simply tell women what to do. I teach them about their bodies and the evidence behind the recommendations so they can make informed decisions that fit their lives.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Telling the truth and living with integrity. Doing the right thing when no one is watching and living to my potential. But most of all, sharing what I learn to help others lead healthy and happy lives.
