Rising Stars: Meet Michelle Mingo of East County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Mingo.

Hi Michelle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began as a yoga student in 2004. I had a teacher who was very much herself, and unknown to me, was setting me up for life success. Over the next few years I casually took classes in multiple settings and set off balancing all of life’s responsibilities. Then COVID happened, and I decided I would look into getting certified as a yoga teacher. I took training through “Breathe for Change,” a program designed for educators who also want to teach yoga. This was a perfect blend of learning the anatomy of yoga along with the Social Emotional Learning I wanted to spread more of. Since then I have founded Redwoods and Ferns, my own brand of a yoga community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The challenges of starting my own business have been present, but not overwhelming. This is my part time business while I teach middle school full time. I’m very open to new experiences and meeting new people so I try to keep an open mind. I know there are unknown opportunities for me ahead!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am most proud of the community that I continue to grow around my yoga events. I have a variety of clients- different ages, genders, and life experiences. I find the greatest joy in finding out what we have in common, and our shared humanity. When we are able to create a welcoming environment its possible to let down our guard a bit and connect with each other in a positive way.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’ve spend most of my life working with kids who have needed to have someone show them they matter. Expanding that to adults has felt like a natural expansion of my talent.
