Rising Stars: Meet Miranda Durkee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miranda Durkee.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve had a camera in my hand since a very young age. And what at first started out as a hobby turned into a passion when I realized all the opportunities that were possible with a camera in my hand. I began my professional photography career as a concert photographer and videographer, shooting for artists like T-Pain and Hayley Kiyoko, as well as a wide range of events. And this is the road I thought I would continue with after graduating college until I photographed my first engagement session. Something about working closely with a couple and documenting their precious moments stuck with me, and I knew that it was something I wanted to run with. I created Miranda Rose Photography in 2019 right after that photo shoot, hoping to continue capturing moments and memories. And I’ve been lucky enough to work with such amazing people since then, who have trusted me with documenting their milestones and special days.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t always been smooth. After traveling and photographing in Europe shortly after the birth of my business, I was forced to return to the US due to the COVID-19 outbreak and try to continue to grow my brand. The wedding and events industry was hit hard last year, and trying to get started in the industry during that time proved to be even harder. But I was dedicated to making my dream into a reality. So I did everything I could to connect with other vendors, make my name known, and capture memories for couples who were having an equally hard time coping with the cancellations and postponements of their special days. Although the start of my business was rocky in ways I couldn’t have ever anticipated, I’m grateful for the opportunities it gave me to meet new friends in the form of vendors and clients and to work harder than I ever have at achieving my dream. And I’m so excited to see the wedding and events industry finally come back to life this year!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a love & lifestyle photographer based in San Diego, California. I specialize in weddings, engagements, families, and branding photography. To me, it’s all about capturing the moment. After all, that’s what photographers are hired to do: capture moments and memories that happen only once in a lifetime. I’m dedicated to portraying moments in the most authentic and accurate ways while at the same time pushing creative boundaries and creating art. I take pride in noticing and capturing the little details that make up the big picture while at the same time taking a step back to capture the essence of the day itself. I’m not just a button pusher because anyone can tell a couple to “say cheese” and stand in stiff poses. I’m an artist concerned solely with catching these moments as they pass so that my clients can hold onto them forever. I have experience photographing all types of situations- from rap concerts to corporate events, to e-commerce, to maternity sessions, engagements, and of course, weddings. I know my camera like the back of my hand and have a great passion for capturing moments through its lens.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
One surprising thing that most people may not know about me is that aside from photography, I also LOVE videography and video editing! I aspired to be a filmmaker before pursuing professional photography and have never lost my love for video. I still take on a few video projects each year, and I draw so much inspiration from them. I’ve done everything from wedding films and branding videos to character animation and narrative films!
