Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Hahn.
Hi Monica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Breaking Into the San Diego Modeling Scene: A Fashion Photographer’s New Studio.
From the moment I saw a childhood video of myself at just four years old — draped in my mother’s oversized evening gown, teetering in high heels, and pretending to strut down an imaginary runway — I knew fashion was in my blood. It was adorable, hilarious, and, looking back, a true foreshadowing of my future.
Today, after 15 years of photographing runway models, fashion events, and building professional modeling portfolios in New York City, I’ve brought that same passion and expertise to San Diego. Fashion and modeling photography is a completely different art form compared to family portraits. It demands a keen eye for artistic styling, the ability to blend unconventional elements, and the talent to elevate a model, designer, or brand to their most captivating potential.
Guiding models into dynamic, fluid poses is essential. For many of my new, aspiring models, I provide hands-on coaching during their shoots to help them master the natural flow of movement that brings images to life. Every detail — from lighting setups and camera lens choices to backdrop selections and posing angles — must be carefully considered to create the bold, iconic look fashion photography requires.
When I opened my second studio here in San Diego, I envisioned a space that went beyond just photography — a full-service experience for models, agents, and designers alike. At INSIDE THE STYLE STUDIO, we offer access to professional hair and makeup artists, a complete studio wardrobe filled with fashionable garments and accessories, and even modeling and posing lessons for those just starting out. From prep to portfolio, we guide our clients through every step — producing comp cards, portfolio books, and stunning imagery all in one place.
Fashion photography is not simply about taking pictures — it’s about capturing artistry. It requires a creative spirit, an eye for style, and an understanding of modern, abstract posing that sets it apart from traditional portraits. Every shot must stop the world in its tracks and demand admiration. It’s a passion that runs deep, and it shows in every image created.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the very first models I ever photographed was a teenage girl — young, full of potential, but completely inexperienced. She struggled with posing, stiff and nervous, unsure of what to do with herself after just a few minutes in front of the camera. I could see her confidence fading, and I realized she simply didn’t have the tools yet to bring out her best.
A little while later, I had the opportunity to photograph a top model from MMG Model Talent and Celebrity Management in New York — someone who had graced countless magazine covers, including the cover of Vogue Italia. Watching her work was a completely different experience. She moved effortlessly and fluidly from one pose to the next, full of confidence and presence. She brought only a few simple outfits and piles of remnant fabrics, along with some odds-and-ends accessories, yet she turned those unconventional pieces into stunning, high-fashion looks.
That moment was a turning point for me. I realized that it wasn’t enough to just photograph models — I needed to be able to teach posing and guide my aspiring models in everything from wardrobe styling to movement. It’s one thing to know how to pose yourself; it’s a whole other skill to teach someone else how to embody it authentically.
It took me a year of intense practice, studying, and refining to master the art of teaching posing to all different body types, age groups, and genders. But once I did, it changed everything — not just for me, but for every model who stepped into my studio.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
There aren’t many experienced fashion or modeling photographers in San Diego, so that has made me the go-to photographers for many models and agents alike. I’m one of the few photography studios that is a full-service studio with Professional Hair & Makeup artists, studio wardrobe, and marketing/branding development services offered all in one place.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I’ve always loved fashion, hair, makeup, and art. I started drawing fashion illustrations in charcoal when I was in middle school then started sewing my own dresses in high school.
