Today we’d like to introduce you to Moshe Edri.

Moshe Edri

Hi Moshe, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, I’m Moshe Edri, a passionate photographer specializing in Fashion, Editorial, and Beauty photography, based in vibrant San Diego. My journey into photography began unexpectedly after relocating from Israel to New York City in 2012 for a tech position. On a Black Friday whim, I purchased my first DSLR, which unexpectedly opened a new world of creativity and expression for me.

As I explored NYC, my camera became more than just a tool; it was my companion in capturing the essence of the city—from its quiet corners to its dynamic streets. Initially focused on landscapes and macro photography, I found comfort in these genres as they suited my introverted nature. However, as my skills evolved and my confidence grew, I was drawn to the more dynamic and collaborative world of fashion photography. It wasn’t just about capturing an image but making a bold statement and bringing visions to life alongside other creative minds.

Since then, I have established my own fully equipped photography studio, a creative space where I can fully realize the artistic visions that fuel my passion. This studio has become a hub for collaboration and innovation, allowing me to work closely with models, designers, and other creatives to produce stunning, impactful imagery.

My approach to photography is straightforward yet profound: I aim to capture authentic, vivid images that not only tell a story but also evoke strong emotions. Collaborating with other creatives is a significant aspect of my work, feeding the energy and passion that drive my projects.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the most significant personal challenges I faced was transitioning from being an introverted photographer focused on landscapes and macro photography to becoming a people photographer. This change forced me out of my comfort zone and required me to engage more directly with subjects, which was initially quite daunting given my introverted nature.

Building a professional network was equally challenging. The fashion and beauty photography scene in San Diego is vibrant yet highly competitive, and establishing a foothold required not just skill but the ability to connect with others. This meant learning to communicate my vision effectively and collaborate with models, stylists, and makeup artists (MUAH). I had to push myself to network, which was a step away from my natural inclinations.

To all the creative souls reading this, I want to take advantage of this interview to invite artists out there to reach out and collaborate. Whether you are a model, stylist, experienced fashion designer, student, MUAH artist, or fellow photographer, I am always eager to explore new projects with creative people and ideas that push the boundaries of creativity. Let’s connect and create something truly inspiring together.

Each of these challenges taught me invaluable lessons about persistence, creativity, and the importance of building a supportive community. Overcoming these obstacles has not only strengthened my skills but also deepened my love for photography, pushing me to constantly innovate and improve.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My photographic style is deeply rooted in the bold and edgy aesthetics of fashion, editorial, and beauty photography. I thrive on playing with shapes, colors, and textures to create visually compelling images. My approach involves using dramatic lighting techniques and innovative compositions that not only capture the beauty of the subject but also evoke a strong emotional response.

Recently, I have been particularly drawn to using gobos and colored gels to add layers of depth, texture, color, and intrigue to my images, creating a signature look that is both vibrant and sophisticated. This technique allows me to sculpt light in a way that highlights the unique aspects of each model and garment, bringing out their best features.

Collaboration is at the heart of my process. Working closely with fashion designers, makeup artists, and stylists, I aim to bring a shared vision to life in a way that feels fresh and exciting. Each shoot is a collective effort to not just take photos, but to tell a story that resonates with audiences and leaves a lasting impression.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Although I have not had a traditional mentor in my photography journey, my path has been shaped by a combination of self-directed learning, collaboration with peers, and inspiration from renowned photographers whose work I admire. This approach has allowed me to develop a unique style and understanding of photography that is entirely my own.

The internet has been an invaluable resource, offering access to countless tutorials, online workshops, and forums where I’ve engaged with other photographers and creatives. These interactions have often served a mentor-like role, providing me with feedback and new perspectives that have guided my growth.

Collaboration has also been a key part of my learning process. Working alongside other photographers, stylists, and artists has taught me about the dynamics of a shoot, the importance of a shared vision, and the intricacies of the creative process.

While I value the traditional mentor-mentee relationship, I have found that learning can come from many sources if one remains curious and open. I continue to seek out new experiences and challenges that push my boundaries, and I am always eager to connect with individuals who can offer new insights into the craft of photography.
