Today we’d like to introduce you to Paz Martinez.
Hi Paz, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Native of Argentina, I studied architecture in Buenos Aires, where I got my Master’s Degree in 2001.
I came to San Diego in May of 2002 searching for new adventures and opportunities.
I had the opportunity to meet and work with incredibly talented people in San Diego in the last 22+ years and learned so much from each and every one of them. Some became not only my colleagues but life long friends and partners in adventures! I am grateful for all of them.
I have been taking on my own projects since 2009 and currently doing contract work for FieldXStudio, a full-service architecture, construction and real estate development firm.
I am a mother to two beautiful human beings, Luna (13) and Gastón (9). They teach me so much every day and I am so grateful for the opportunity to be their mother. They challenge me, they give me a reason to be stronger and brighter every day.
I find motivation in travelling and learning from different cultures, the ocean, the mountains and connecting with the natural world! It is a very important part of my life and very much what grounds me as a human being.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part it has been a smooth road. That said, life of course has its challenges but I am grateful for every challenge that shaped me.
Being from a different country has challenges on its own, like missing your culture, your language, your friends and family.. But it is in the challenges where we learn and it is in craziness where brilliance shines through, as a good friend of mine once told me.
You can’t cross the ocean of life just by dreaming about it, you have to jump in and swim… and this simple yet powerful statement has kept me going and going through my hardest times.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an architect, a designer, an artist, and a creative person. I have been working mostly on residential projects but have also done some commercial, educational and museum work.
I love anything that has to do with creating better spaces for people, for communities and for the environment. Whether it’s a house, a palapa, a shelter, a piece of furniture, art or a garden, it has to make you feel whole and connected to the elements, it has to tell a story, an emotion, a feeling.
I am very detail oriented too. It is important to me and I truly believe that it is in the details that we make a difference.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I like the beaches and the proximity to the mountains. You can go hiking in the nearby mountains and then go for a surf session or walk on the beach in the evening…. that is very unique and special.
I don’t like the lack of public transportation.
