Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Williams-Ford.
Hi Phillip, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Raised in South Bay San Diego since 2000 after being forced to move here at a young age has had me look for purpose. With a big house full of siblings, I needed to create my own path for my life. since a young age i felt like i wa sin the shadow of my phenom of a brother when it came to sports or doing what i enjoy. I started getting envoled in the community with the boys & girls club as a leader and athlete for summer camps. With that came my first award of youth of the year in 2002, after that I was hooked at helping as much people as i coould no matter the situation.
Struggled in school a bit but maintained to graduate high school from MAAC Community Charter School in 2009. With many avenues that could of been taken, I decided to attend Southwestern College to try for his A.A in communications. After playing football for the SWC Jaguars for one year an opportunity to play international football approached and desided to take it. After a few years of playing in minor leagues, I got my first major contract in 2016 in Costa Rica where I was able to win a national championship. To this day my mission is to inspire people through my football journey and willingness to help with positivity.
Beyond the game of football, I want to make a positive impact on his community so I chose to slow my football career and started working at my old school as an assistant P.E coach. As an African American male in south bay San Diego I still feel alone and misunderstood. To me, it just seems to be pointless to try and uplift and inspire since not many people in this area looks like me. More is on the table for me as I see the area of town I grew up in struggling to stay growing and relevant. The goal of my business (Prime Example) is to help everyone win in growth and/or wellness.I have been able to organically growing relationships with a number of San Diego’s artists, clothing lines, and content creators I wanted to support and have a place in the city that can be used for good.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
On the road of trying to be successful, I feel left out and discouraged by where the attention of funds and support are going. With my regular job at the school I cannot affort to fund my own dream because of how low is. Having a job where pay is is just the ammount to get by leaves me in a sunken place. With no family around me, i struggle with staying positive and trying my hardest not to become a stereotype by any means.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Since 2016 i have been employed by my old school MAAC Community Charter School in Chula Vista. Myy job titile is Instructional Assistance for Physical Education but extend past that. This was a plan as a young boy to work at my old school and i am greatful for this opportunity always. This is the longest lasting job I have had and I am quiet proud of what I do. I get set apart because I am cut from a similar cloth as the students I teach. I let them know what life is like beyind school and how the world treats bllack and brown people in the real world.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Besides my life living with my grandmother would be having a close family around the holidays and football season. We always made time to watch sports or eat with one another on holidays. i havent had that type of luxury since my siblings moved out of California in 2012.
