Today we’d like to introduce you to Prince Elongo.
Hi Prince, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I got started DJ’ing by teaching myself and spending time practicing with my friend Ricky whenever we weren’t busy doing photography or social media marketing for other clubs and DJs. We were already around music and nightlife so much through that work, and eventually I felt pulled to be part of the experience in a different way not just capturing the moment, but helping create it. That process really reignited my love for music.
Along the way, the DJ community played and still plays a huge role in my growth. Learning from other DJs, getting encouragement, and being part of a community that genuinely wants to see each other improve has been a big part of my journey.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not always, like most creative paths, it hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Starting out, one of the biggest challenges was simply learning everything on my own and building confidence behind the decks. There’s also the process of getting consistent opportunities, earning trust from venues, and figuring out how to stand out while still staying true to my sound. Another challenge has been balancing the creative side of DJ’ing with the business side, networking, promoting myself, and continuing to grow my skills at the same time. But those challenges have helped me improve and stay motivated. The support from the DJ community and every opportunity to play has made the journey worth it and keeps me pushing forward.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I DJ with a focus on creating a real connection with the crowd and making sure the music speaks first. I mostly play open-format sets with R&B, hip-hop, afrobeats, Latin, and dance music mixed in whatever fits the moment and keeps the energy right. I’m known for reading the room, smooth transitions, and building a vibe that feels natural instead of forced.
Over the last two years, I’ve grown a lot from teaching myself and practicing consistently to playing in real spaces and learning from other DJs. Something I’ve learned along the way is that the music is way more important than the glamour that can come with DJ’ing. The lights, social media, and nightlife are fun, but what really matters is song selection, timing, and creating a genuine experience for people.
What sets me apart is my background working in nightlife through photography and social media marketing for clubs and DJs. That gave me a different perspective on how events and crowds work before I even started DJ’ing. I think that perspective helps me stay intentional about what I play and how I approach every set.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I’d say start because you genuinely love music not just because you want the title of being a DJ. The title and the attention might look appealing, but what really matters is the time you spend practicing, learning your music library, and understanding how to move a crowd. If you don’t enjoy the process, it’s hard to grow. Something I wish I knew when I was starting out is how important patience and consistency are. Progress doesn’t happen overnight it comes from practicing regularly, learning from mistakes, and staying open to feedback. I also learned pretty quickly how valuable the DJ community is. Being around other DJs, asking questions, and sharing knowledge can help you grow much faster than trying to do everything alone. My biggest advice would be to focus on the music first, stay humble, and keep practicing the opportunities and recognition will come with time.
