Rising Stars: Meet Ray Torres of Oceanside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ray Torres

Hi Ray , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, it’s been quite a journey! Duchess Barefoot officially kicked off in May 2022, but the story goes back much further. My family and I have been working in leather goods manufacturing for over a decade. We’ve always had a deep respect for craftsmanship and sustainable practices, which naturally led us to the world of barefoot shoes.

You see, we’re all about promoting foot health, and the more we learned about the benefits of barefoot shoes, the more passionate we became. It felt like a perfect blend of our experience and values. Starting Duchess Barefoot was a way to bring our vision to life, creating footwear that’s not only good for your feet but also crafted with care and responsibility. It’s been an exciting adventure, and we’re just getting started!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any journey worth taking, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Starting and growing a small business comes with its fair share of challenges. For us, it’s been a mix of navigating the logistics of manufacturing, making sure our products meet the highest standards, and of course, getting the word out in a competitive market.

One of the biggest hurdles was balancing our commitment to sustainability with the need to scale. We didn’t want to compromise on our values, so finding the right partners, staff, and materials took time. There were moments of doubt, like when supply chain issues cropped up, or when we faced the typical growing pains of a new brand.

But through it all, we’ve kept our eye on the prize—creating quality barefoot shoes that our customers love. Every challenge has taught us something valuable, and we’re more excited than ever about what the future holds for Duchess Barefoot. We’re just getting started!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Duchess Barefoot, we’re all about creating shoes that support natural foot health while looking stylish and feeling great. We specialize in barefoot shoes that tick all the boxes our customers care about—flexibility, zero drop, wide toe box, and a connection to the ground that’s as close to barefoot as you can get, but with the protection you need.

What really sets us apart is our commitment to handmade, sustainable fashion. Every pair of shoes is crafted with care, using materials that are both eco-friendly and durable. We focus on women and children because we believe that everyone should have access to footwear that supports their health and well-being.

I’m most proud of the fact that we’ve stayed true to our values. We don’t cut corners, and we don’t settle for anything less than a product we’re proud to put our name on. Our customers know they’re getting something special—a product that’s not just good for their feet but good for the planet too. That’s what makes us stand out in a crowded market.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The Covid-19 crisis was a challenging time for everyone, and it certainly taught us a lot. One of the most important lessons we learned was the value of adaptability. The pandemic threw curveballs at us—disruptions in supply chains, changes in consumer behavior, and the need to rethink how we connect with our customers.

It also reinforced the importance of community and supporting one another. We realized just how vital it is to stay connected, whether through our online presence or by being there for our customers in meaningful ways. The crisis reminded us that at the heart of our business, it’s not just about making shoes—it’s about being part of a larger, supportive community.

On a more personal level, the pandemic gave us the opportunity to reassess what truly matters in our work. We doubled down on our commitment to sustainability and quality, knowing that these values resonate even more during times of uncertainty. In many ways, the crisis helped us sharpen our focus and reaffirm our mission.
