Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Hann.
Rob, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
During my modeling career in the ’80s, I thought I might become a photographer. I bought a camera and started photographing friends. The first photo work I got was a portrait of Lydia Lunch shot in 1993 for a short-lived music magazine called Lime Lizard. There followed a career shooting many musicians, actors, authors, etc for magazines, newspapers, and record companies. In 2001 I took my first photo road trip through the American Southwest driving from LA to Marfa, Texas, and back again. It was to change my career and since then I’ve taken countless road trips and make my living through selling prints of photos I take on the road. The first book of my road trip photos was published in 2018 by The Artist Edition. I’m working on a second book at the moment.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve been very lucky. It took several years to get my first break shooting portraits for magazines but once that happened, I kept busy and shot over 900 commissions over several years. Once I decided to try to sell my road trip pictures, I started selling small prints on the street in SoHo, NYC. After a few months, I met Christiane Celle, the owner of Clic at my table in SoHo. Clic started selling large, limited editions of my work through their several locations in NYC, California, and St. Barths. Shortly after that I also met Christian Larsen, the owner of Larsen Warner gallery in Stockholm, Sweden who decided to represent me and I’ve had two solo shows with the gallery as well as a museum show in Sweden. Through much of the year, I still sell small prints from my table in SoHo as well the larger limited edition prints through Clic and Larsen Warner. The rest of the year I spend our house in Joshua Tree and on the road shooting photos.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Whenever I can I get on the road and drive thousands of miles looking for the right pictures. I’m looking for something that captures the imagination. I often want people seeing the photos to think “what’s going on here?”. The photo has to be interesting and, ideally, beautiful too. I’m originally from England and I think my pictures can often be seen as a European’s romantic idea of America. I guess if pushed I might say I’m proud that I’ve been able to support myself doing something I love, and it gives me pleasure that so many people around the world own and enjoy my photos.
