Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Basabe.
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was introduced to the world of photography when I was in high school. I took a black-and-white film photography class and my teacher (who was a photographer and local artist) helped me to appreciate many forms of art. My dad bought me a small “point and shoot” digital camera (this was around the time my baby sister was born) so I was constantly taking photos of her, my other siblings, cousins, and even some self-portraits. Eventually, I started taking senior portraits for a few friends and then shot my first wedding in 2012. Since then, I’ve been photographing weddings, couples, and families.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s this thing in the photography community called imposter syndrome where you constantly compare yourself to others which in turn causes you to doubt yourself and your work. Especially living in San Diego, where there are so many other awesome photographers. But over the years, I’ve learned to stop comparing myself to others and focus on improving my craft and client experience. I want potential clients to want to book with me because they genuinely love my work and my style. It took so many years, but I finally feel confident in my photography and am getting to work with people who are truly excited to get their photos taken by me. I’m producing photos that not only I love but that my clients love, too. It feels so good to have people trust me enough to hire me for their wedding day or other milestones like a proposal, engagement, maternity, or family photos.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in natural light lifestyle family/couples’ photography and wedding photography. Instead of overly posed and awkward photos, my approach is more relaxed, natural, and authentic, all while utilizing the beauty San Diego has to offer. We have so many amazing locations to choose from for photoshoots. During a photo session, you’ll often catch me snapping candid shots and all of those “in-between” moments. I still might pose you, but it’ll look natural and not forced. I’m proud to be able to give clients dreamy, romantic, and timeless photos that won’t look outdated years from now. No cookie-cutter photos from me. I’ll give you photos that you can feel- photos that will help you relive all those happy tears, laughs, and special moments.
What do you think about luck?
Honestly, I don’t believe in luck. I’m very appreciative for the good friendships I’ve had and grateful for those who took a chance on me when I was first starting out. I’m thankful for the word of mouth those friends and early clients provided to help my business keep growing.
I feel if I can deliver quality, timeless photos to those who have hired me, the word of mouth that they give is more valuable than luck could ever be.
