Rising Stars: Meet Sergio Gutierrez of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergio Gutierrez

Hi Sergio, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My career started when I picked up a guitar at the age of 15 in a small town south of Albuquerque, NM called Los Lunas. In the first couple of years, I quite literally played for 10 hours a day in my small bedroom and quickly found out that creating music And performing live in front of audiences was something I was born to do. It felt so natural from the starting line….and with music, there is no finish line. I find so much beauty in that.

Five years into playing most of the stages in the local Albuquerque, New Mexico area, I decided to pick up and move West. Yeah I know, the typical story- moved to Hollywood, CA. I performed a few of my dream gigs at some prominent LA venues; the Whisky a Go Go being at the top of my list as a young 20 yr old.

As a small town boy, I realized that Hollywood wasn’t the place for me after a few short months. So, I moved to beautiful San Diego.

I played music for a living. It was a dream come true. And then, I found the paintbrush.

So at 24 years old, I was a full time musician and learning the art of painting.

A lot happened in my career from 24 yrs old to 30 yrs old, but the most profound day was when I discovered that I had the ability to bring something totally unique to the people at my performances: live music AND live art all in one show. The first show being a wonderful showcase of playing and singing Beatles music and then painting a large Paul McCartney. I sold the painting on the spot and a colorful realization hit me- I can do this on a greater scale and bring it to the masses. And this is what I’ve been doing all over the world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The main struggles, for me, have always been the new stages of any particular part of the career. You start off, and you don’t really expect much because you are so new to the game. You just go out there and do your thing. After sometime, you rise to a new level and find a new set of struggles that didn’t really exist Until you reached that new level.

Looking back, that’s actually the fun part. It’s a struggle when you are in that moment, but one has to realize that the fact you are moving up the ladder is always a good thing.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I will have to say that I am most proud of the charity work that me and my team have done. We have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars with live music, Live art, or a combination of the two.

With live painting, people witness something magical. I see adults turn into children as they witness creation from beginning to end. I believe that we are all creators, but what live artists do on stage boggles most peoples minds And it’s a wonderful feeling to see their glowing faces!

And you have to realize that the painting is not only a painting when it’s performed live on stage, but it also becomes an experience and this is why it becomes so desirable. And this is why a live painting can go for several thousands of dollars. There’s an actual story to it!

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I am a firm believer in the power of creating one’s own luck. Every morning, I rise early to engage in reading and writing, ensuring my goals are meticulously documented. With these goals clearly outlined, I implement structured systems that facilitate their achievement. Ultimately, this clarity and unwavering work ethic cultivate a thriving and fulfilling artistic lifestyle.
