Rising Stars: Meet Shellie Robinson of Sorrento Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shellie Robinson.

Hi Shellie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got my start in the kitchen before I could even walk — seriously! One of my earliest memories is standing on a stool, peeling potatoes for my aunt’s famous potato salad. In my family, food was everything. Holidays were major, but we cooked feast-sized meals every week just because. With three sisters, five brothers, and a grandmother who welcomed any child in need of a home, there was always a crowd — and always someone to feed.

As the youngest in the house, I naturally gravitated toward the kitchen, often cooking for my siblings and their friends. I went on to attend culinary school right after high school, though that wasn’t the original plan. I grew up playing travel basketball, and funny enough, I’ve found the kitchen isn’t all that different — it’s all about teamwork, hustle, and staying cool under pressure.

Over the years, I’ve had the chance to work across a wide range of cuisines, from Croatian to American, Hawaiian fusion to modern Mexican. Today, I’m excited to bring that global influence into a fresh new focus: blending bold British flavors with vibrant California style.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a woman in the culinary industry definitely comes with its challenges. I’ve worked my way up in nearly every kitchen I’ve stepped into — not because I lacked the knowledge, but because I wanted to learn everything from the ground up. That hands-on approach helped me grow quickly, but rising through the ranks can sometimes create friction with teammates, especially in an industry that has long been male-dominated. Still, I’ve learned to lead with humility, earn respect through hard work, and stay focused on what really matters — the food and the team behind it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a chef who truly loves every part of this business — from the intensity of the kitchen to the creativity behind each dish. I specialize in delivering the “wow factor” — food that not only stands out but keeps people coming back because they simply can’t find it anywhere else. I’m known for using ingredients in their best, most natural form and creating dishes that either highlight or perfectly complement them. For me, it’s all about bold flavor, intentional technique, and unforgettable experiences.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
As a kid, I was outgoing, talkative, and full of energy. People used to call me a “human jukebox” because I’d turn just about any conversation into a song. I was always on the move — playing every sport I could and riding bikes around the neighborhood with the other kids. Whether it was music, movement, or making people laugh, I was all in — and that same energy still drives me today.
