Today we’d like to introduce you to Tayler Jones.
Hi Tayler, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I got my start in flowers in 2009, I was driving by Browne’s Flowers in my home town Dana Point and saw they were hiring. I had always loved the idea of being a florist so I applied and was hired. I immediately loved my job. It was so enjoyable to working in such a beautiful and fragrant place and helping customers who were excited to show their love with fresh flowers. I eventually moved on from that shop and started working for a talented wedding and event florist. Krista Jon became a mentor to me and showed me all of the aspects of floral design as well as the business and technical side of things. Working with Krista Jon really propelled my taste level and passion for the art of floral design. I moved to San Diego in 2012 and bounced around different flower shop jobs until I had my daughter Primrose in 2013. I did my first solo wedding that year along with some other parties and decided to take the leap into starting my own floral business named after my baby, Primrose & Company. I had a lot of fun doing events as they came and started to really build a portfolio and connections in the industry. When my second child Jones was born, I took some time to recover but was back full force at flowers when they turned one year old. By this point, things were really starting to pick up and I was determined to do it all. I was doing news segments, weddings, parties and more as well as being a full-time parent and wife. It was a very overwhelming time for me. In May 2018, I was suffering from major stomach pain and was unable to eat or sleep. I ended up in the hospital and was diagnosed with gallstones and was told I needed to have my gall bladder removed immediately. I stayed at the hospital for three days. My surgery happened on Sunday night, on the following Friday, Saturday and Sunday, I had events scheduled and paid for. I was committed to following thru with my contracts and with some help, I completed those projects and officially suffered a major burnout.
After that experience, I needed some time to heal and refocus my energy on myself and my family. It took about one year to come back to myself. During that time, I felt deep despair. It was a very hard time for me. One day I randomly saw that Allen’s Flowers was hiring and I decided to apply just to be back around flowers and to have the opportunity to create art again. When I arrived at the interview they had reviewed my resume and decided to offer me a different role at their company. They offered me the position as the head of their wedding and event department. I thought long and hard about whether or not I wanted to work that position. I decided to take a leap back into floral design and said yes to the offer. Working again reignited my passion or design and my excitement for life. Shortly after starting my position, the pandemic hit. Most of my weddings were postponed but I was able to still work on smaller elopements and other flower orders. I had a great time working there and really loved my coworkers. During my time there, I started developing my passion as an entrepreneur again and started formulating a vision for the future. My love for design extends into space design and event coordinating. I was taking on small projects of my own along the way and the idea for Guest List was taking form. 2021 was a very transformative year for me. I came to terms with my sexuality and peacefully separated from my husband on our nine years wedding anniversary, moved out, and grew in love with an amazing person.
Over the summer Krista Jon, my mentor, reached out to me with an opportunity to work on a huge wedding with a short timeline. I recognized it was time for me to take the huge leap of leaving my stable position at Allen’s Flowers and start my own companies once again. I quit my job in September 2021 and formed two new businesses. Tayler Jupiter Designs is my floral design company where I sell my services and floral art for weddings, events, as well as high-end weekly flower displays for homes and business. I have also started Guest List International, a full-service event design and coordination service. I partner with beautiful venues to create nine signature looks that complement their space that are sold as design packages through the venue. These packages include all of your rentals, florals, clean up services and more. I am currently working on a website for Guest List where you will be able to book your venue, fully design your wedding, and book all of your vendors in as little as 20 minutes. My dream for Guest List is to bring it internationally and create beautiful, unique designs all over the world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been smooth, there is a lot to learn about being a business owner. Creating a healthy work/life balance has definitely been a struggle for me but I am getting must better at it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in creating very memorable, intentional parties with a ton of creativity and life. I can turn any space into an absolute wonderland. As well as bringing intention to the time spent at the parties and weddings I create. I always include interactive art, performers, and amazing vibes.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success for me comes when I reveal my creations to my clients and they’re overwhelmed with excitement about the vision that we have created together coming to life and exceeding their expectations.
