Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Blue.
Hi Tiffany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
The summer going into my freshman year at my family reunion. I approached my cousin Karlis cutting the hair of another cousin under the shed. He noticed my interest and asked if I wanted to try. He allowed me to cut one of cousins’ hair with his assistants. From then on, every time I saw a male, I’d picture how their haircut should look, or if their current barber took their hairline back. Fast forward to years later. I’m an adult. Karlis had passed a couple months back, and his brother Khris asked me to come give him a line up because I was only comfortable giving lineups. I get to his house and he hands me some different clippers meant to actually cut the hair. It’s only hair, it’ll grow back. He ended up snatching the clippers out of my hands and yelling that it’s only hair lol. While also discussing that I need to figure out a way to get into barber school because I know that is what I always wanted to do. Khris ended up passing about a month later and I couldn’t get passed that conversation. So, I figured out how to go to barber school and had vowed to give it my all once I got into school.
I ended up in SD after a visit I made for my birthday turned out fantastic. I went back to NC and prayed to God about moving to California and He confirmed that I should move. A few months later, I had took the drive from NC to San Diego.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a bumpy road from the beginning. I got picked on at my first shop for how my fades looked. But it made me push harder towards standing out as a barber with making sure my fades looked good down to offering more services.
Another major challenge occurred the month I was supposed to move here, a family emergency happened. I moved a few months later, and in the midst of building clientele, covid hits, and my mother passed; I ended up pretty much homeless, and through faith/prayer, God sent help. Since then, I have nothing to complain about. God has seen me through all my challenges, and I’m forever grateful.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a barber. I specialize in haircare and skincare services. I perform facials and scalp services along with normal barbershop services in a private suite. I am most proud of the vibes that I bring that goes along with my services. Rather than the typical barbershop conversations, myself or the client controls the flow whether we’re conversing or whether they just want to have a little conversation while tuning mostly into the music playing. I set myself apart from others by paying attention to the details of the client skincare/haircare. Being able to provide services to help with common issues and more while also providing a relaxing massage and hot towel per service.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Favorite books that have helped me do my best in life are, “Crazy Faith” by Pastor Michael Todd, “Discerning the voice of God” by Priscilla Shirer, The “Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz, “The Fifth Agreement” by Don Miguel Ruiz and Don Jose Ruiz. I’m an artist as well so I spend a lot of time on YouTube tuning up my different talents such as drawing and crafting.
