Rising Stars: Meet Trent Taylor of Pacific Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trent Taylor

Hi Trent , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born September 11th 1990.I grew up going back and forth every year from Georgia To Miami Florida. I’ve been producing music for a little over 20 years. At 18 I had plans to pursue music in Atlanta but got into trouble which ended up gettin me in a situation where I was able to choose from going to court or joining the military so I chose the Air Force. The Air Force sent me to Tucson AZ where I would stay besides a 6 month deployment to Afghanistan. I ended up getting kicked out of the Air Force in my last week for using marijuana. That decision lead me to becoming homeless which I do not at all regret. After the military I found myself in a unique set of circumstances where I had little to no options so I turned to street life and would go on to do that for years in Arizona until I was able to make myself a name in the music industry. My business in San Diego goes by the name “DopeHouse”. It is a reflection of those times and me taking it and making light of the situation. It is a record store in partnership with Vintage Thread & Grail. I’m mainly a producer and dopehouse is a passion project of mine I’ve been able to make happen with my business partners Stephen and OHKY. I was randomly invited to play a show in San Diego at this vintage store. No one showed up. My car also broke down when it was time to leave and I ended up staying at the owners condo a couple days and we got ideas to sell records in the store and I would be the curator. I use records everyday to look for samples for my productions. I recently produced an album for 2010 XXL Freshmen Fashawn titled “YOU OWE US WITH INTEREST” under San Diego based label Mid90s. It has been featured in XXL , Vibe Magazine and many more major platforms. I have an album on the way with Propaganda which will also have additional keys from Danny Thomas of Con Funk Shun.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road at all. One of the biggest struggles is getting the support but you can’t give up. Things take time. Every artist feels they can be doing more but I feel like when we don’t stop and enjoy the journey we will forever feel that way. Perspective is everything. A lot of those corny sayings you hear all the time hold a lot of weight. I know it’s a struggle from personal experience but shifting your perspective to be grateful at all times really helps.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve been producing music for 20 years. Mostly beat tapes until recently . I’m especially proud of my last release YOU OWE US WITH INTEREST with Fashawn and am humbled with a lot of the accolades and features we were able to get. Tim Clark from San Diego spearheaded the project and really put together a classic. I’ve always made sample based hiphop beats.

What matters most to you? Why?
Peace of mind. I learned you can accomplish a lot of things in life but without peace of mind they really don’t mean much .
