Rising Stars: Meet Uwila Simposya

Today we’d like to introduce you to Uwila Simposya.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My passion for fashion started out when I was in grade school and I couldn’t afford to get many clothes. The time in my life taught me how to use the resources I have in order to express myself through fashion.  I would curate different outfits using the same couple of tees and pants that I owned while I rotate my shoes. As I got older and got a job, my style continued to evolve because I was able to start buying the pieces that I used to eye when I was younger as well as new collections that would drop. But the foundation of knowing how to put different garments together stayed with me forever. I use Instagram not as a place to flex but more so as a place to express myself, as you scroll down my timeline you can see that I am 100% myself whether it is the vibrant colors, cool glasses, crazy poses all that helps me feel confident in my own skin and that’s what fashion is about. If you love yourself, own it and show the world just how incredible you are!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a Daca recipient, I have faced a lot of adversity throughout my life. But If I had a choice I wouldn’t change anything about it. I think all the challenges I have faced have made me who I am today and also overcoming some of those bumpy roads is so rewarding.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My journey in fashion eventually led me to start my own brand with my cousin called AOD (Pronounced “odd”) and it stands for “Above Our Differences”! As two men who were born and raised in Zambia and eventually moved to America, we grew up heavily influenced by African and African American culture. Over time we realized that though there are noticeable differences there is a common essence amongst homeland and the diaspora cultures, which is soul. This soulful essence can be felt from the rhythm of the music, the relentless spirit of overcoming struggle, the heavy importance place on community & a higher power, and the style. The purpose of this brand is that Above Our Differences we want to connect the people from all backgrounds to the essence of Afro and Street. We believe that we have a valuable and unique perspective on the world and that’s what we try to portray with our brand. We intended to host multiple pop-up events around the San Diego area in 2022 and we hope to one day meet you all in person.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Discipline, work ethic, consistency, confidence, humility, humble, transparency and ability to listen are all huge keys into being successful in all areas of your life. These qualities and characteristics are most definitely things that you constantly have to work on.
