Rising Stars: Meet Victoria Mitchell of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Mitchell.

Hi Victoria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Texas and moved to California to go to USC. I made my way down to San Diego for for law school and eventually married and had two boys. After working at a couple law firms, I struggled with infertility and so decided I wanted to stay home and raise my sons. As they got older, I realized I wanted to get into movie making. So I became an executive producer and started making movies.

One part I love about producing is taking the films on the festival circuit. Its so satisfying to see the movie on the big screen. You also learn more about the industry and meet other independent filmmakers.

I have always loved giving back to our community. I have been volunteering at Third Avenue Charitable Organization in downtown San Diego helping the homeless. I also enjoy volunteering for Labs & More Rescue helping shelter animals and fostering puppies. Im on the Host Committee for the Zoo Alliance. I also am on several committees for Promises2Kids. I just feel that we should always give back and help those that are vulnerable.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Becoming an executive producer for me meant learning everything g I could about the industry. It was important to me to start from the beginning of a producing a movie and following the process to the end. So alot of learning regarding location scouts, table reads, the actual filming and details involved and then post production.

The main challenge in independent filmmaking is funding.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an award winning executive producer in independent film making. I have loved going to the movies and just escaping into another world. I feel that the experience of movies is better in the theater.

I have produced one feature called Alive. I have produced several short films: A Midwestern Methamphetamine Fairytale, Marny’s Gift, The Torture Within, and A Congress of Crows. I also produced Married to El Chapo which recently was released on Peacock.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to those just starting out would be to never put yourself in a box. You can be many different things at various times in your life. Always look for what makes you happy, give back and think outside the box.
