Rising Stars: Meet Vikita Poindexter

Today we’re excited to be connecting with Vikita Poindexter again. If you haven’t already, we suggest you check out our prior conversation with them here.

Vikita , thanks for joining us again. Just to level set a bit for folks who may have missed our last interview together, can you briefly introduce yourself?
:We’re thrilled to reconnect! I’m Vikita Poindexter, a seasoned HR professional with over 35 years of experience and the President and CEO of Poindexter Consulting Group. Our firm specializes in HR optimization, strategic planning, DEI programs, workplace investigations, and leadership development. We partner with organizations—ranging from private companies to public agencies—to create efficient, compliant, and people-centric HR strategies that drive growth and long-term success.

What sets me apart is a holistic approach to HR. It’s more than policies and procedures; it’s about creating cultures where employees thrive and businesses grow. My journey has been deeply personal. I’ve overcome tremendous adversity, from childhood challenges to navigating motherhood after the devastating loss of my own mother. Those experiences shaped how I lead with empathy, grace, and accountability.

I’m proud to serve as the Board President for GRID Alternative Inland Empire, Vice-Chair of the California Department of Insurance Diversity Task Force and as a public member of the State Bar of California’s Committee on Professional Responsibility and Conduct. These roles allow me to advocate for equity, ethical leadership, and inclusive practices across industries.

Poindexter Consulting Group stands out for our commitment to transforming workplaces by aligning business goals with human needs. Whether it’s guiding clients through conflict resolution, conducting critical workplace investigations, or optimizing HR structures, we aim to leave organizations better than we found them—equipped to meet evolving challenges with confidence.

My journey has been about turning brokenness into breakthroughs, and I’m passionate about empowering others to rise above obstacles with grace, humility, and purpose.

Awesome, so we reached out because we wanted to hear all about what you have been up to since we last connected.
Thank you so much for having me back!
It’s been an incredible journey since we last spoke, and I’m excited to share some updates. Over the past year, I’ve focused on expanding Poindexter Consulting Group’s reach, deepening our client partnerships, and launching new initiatives that align with my passion for creating meaningful change in the workplace.

One of the most exciting aspects of our work has been our continued commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. As Vice-Chair of the California Department of Insurance Diversity Task Force, along with my other board positions, I have been a strong advocate for inclusive hiring practices and ethical leadership across industries. These roles provide me with a platform to contribute to critical conversations on equity, accountability, and organizational transformation—areas I am deeply passionate about. Diversity, equity, and inclusion go beyond race and gender; they are about ensuring that your workforce reflects the demographics of your customer base. A truly inclusive organization fosters diverse perspectives, creating stronger, more innovative, and equitable business practices.

On the consulting side, we’ve seen a growing demand for HR optimization services. Organizations are realizing that HR is no longer just about compliance—it’s about culture, employee engagement, and long-term strategy. We’ve been helping businesses navigate complex challenges like workplace investigations, leadership transitions, and creating equitable, people-first workplaces. It’s fulfilling to see our work making a tangible impact, especially as more companies shift their focus toward accountability and inclusion.

Personally, I’ve been diving into my book project, Brokenness to Breakthrough. A Journey of Grace, Resilience, and Faith Through Life’s Greatest Trials. It’s been an emotional and reflective process, revisiting my journey of overcoming adversity and finding grace in the hardest moments. The goal of the book is to inspire others to rise above their circumstances and lead with compassion, humility, and purpose. I’m hopeful this project will open doors to more speaking engagements, workshops, and conversations that spark change.

It hasn’t all been easy—there are always challenges. Balancing growth, managing client expectations, and staying true to my values requires constant adjustment. But I’ve learned to embrace the evolution. I’m excited about what’s next, including exploring new partnerships, offering more leadership development programs, and continuing to help organizations build strong, inclusive cultures.

The journey is ongoing, and I’m here for it all—the good, the bad, the unexpected twists. What keeps me grounded is knowing that my work helps people, whether it’s guiding leaders through difficult situations or empowering individuals to rise above adversity. That’s what drives me forward every day.

Thank you again for this opportunity to reflect and share! I’m looking forward to what’s ahead—and to continuing this ever-evolving journey.

Life is often about tough choices – can you talk to us about your thought process, strategy or philosophy when it comes to making difficult choices or tradeoffs.
Life is a series of crossroads, and I’ve learned that the most difficult choices often shape our greatest growth. For me, decision-making starts with one core question: Does this choice align with my values and purpose? That clarity of purpose has been my compass, especially when faced with tough tradeoffs.

One of the most challenging choices I’ve had to make was walking away from business opportunities, situations or relationships that didn’t align with my integrity. I’ve learned that protecting your peace and staying true to your principles often comes at a cost—but the alternative is far more damaging. Whether it’s declining a project that doesn’t feel right, stepping away from toxic environments, or standing firm in advocating for what’s fair and just, I’ve found that doing the right thing is rarely the easiest thing. But it’s always the most rewarding in the long run.

I approach difficult choices with a mix of logic and empathy. I ask myself:
• What are the potential consequences, both immediate and long-term?
• Who will this impact, and how?
• Am I making this decision out of fear or faith?

When making tough calls, I lean into grace and humility, knowing that no decision is ever perfect, and there’s always something to learn from it. I also believe in owning your decisions. If you make a mistake, acknowledge it, learn from it, and move forward with integrity.

One of the hardest tradeoffs in my professional life has been choosing between financial gain and protecting my values. There have been moments when I’ve had to walk away from lucrative opportunities because they didn’t align with the kind of leader I want to be or the legacy I want to leave. In those moments, I remind myself that success isn’t measured solely by numbers—it’s measured by the impact you have on people’s lives and the principles you refuse to compromise.

Ultimately, I believe that resilience comes from learning to navigate those tough choices with both strength and grace. The road isn’t always easy, but the journey is worth it when you can look back and say, I stayed true to who I am. That’s where the breakthrough lies.
