Rising Stars: Meet Weston Boucher of Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Weston Boucher.

Weston Boucher

Hi Weston, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Weston Jon Bouchér is a menswear designer, agency-repped model and youtuber based out of San Diego. Weston’s love for the creative world has translated into a body of work spanning across multiple decades and industries. Weston was born in Los Angeles, California and then relocated at a young age to San Diego and has been there ever since for the year round sunshine, laid back lifestyle and ocean air.

Fresh out of high school, Weston initially went to a trade school to study 3D modeling in the hopes of being in the video game industry. About 7 months in, he left the program early and aggressively pursued a QA/testing position at Midway Games(Mortal Kombat). Weston went on to work in the video game industry for 7 years and eventually landed a Producer role.

Once Midway Games was acquired by Warner Bros, Weston then pivoted to learning photography and starting a business/studio after having photographed as a hobby during his work trips overseas with Midway Games. Weston spent 13 years in the photography industry, shooting everything from apparel to products to people to events and more. https://www.westonboucher.com/photographybio

Not to be overshadowed by photography and gaming, since High School Weston had a strong passion for music/songwriting and had also been in rock bands as a guitarist/vocalist outside of his full time jobs. Writing and recording several albums in the band Spero Lumina, and then going on to compose his own original production music for film/tv/media, including some voice over work. Additionally he studied classical guitar and performed in an ensemble based in La Jolla, CA. https://www.westonboucher.com/music

Through his network of photography contacts, Weston landed a modeling audition for Harley Davidson motorcycles. Weston booked the job and loved the experience/challenge so much he took initiative to pursue several modeling agency “open castings” until one would eventually sign him.

From a young age, Weston took a strong interest in health & fitness, which would later serve him well with the discipline required to be “camera-ready” at all times. Weston went on to model full time for over 11 years with 9 agencies, worldwide(Wilhelmina, LA Models). Working with a plethora of legacy brands and landing a Men’s Health Magazine Cover while working in Cape Town, South Africa(Mercedes Benz, LG Electronics, Cadillac, Polo, Lexus, Philipp Plein, Capital One, Martini & Rossi/Bacardi, GMC, Southwest Airlines, Hyundai, Mattel, Ford Motors, MasterCard). https://www.westonboucher.com/modeling

During this time, he started a Youtube channel to share his industry experience on health and fitness, grooming, style and beyond. The response from men who were interested in self-improvement and self-care was overwhelming. Weston’s channel grew very quickly and presented more potential to help men in the area of style and fashion. This led him to apply his experience and exposure in the fashion world to creating and designing his own menswear line, Weston Jon Bouchér. Which he currently is dedicated to, full-time. https://www.westonjonboucher.com | https://www.youtube.com/westonboucher

Weston lives in Cardiff By The Sea, loves beach volleyball, WW2 era motorcycles, classical guitar, philanthropic causes, world travel, being present, and his numero uno role model is Christ.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think “smooth” is relative to one’s ability to let go of control to some degree and accept that life plans may not look as linear as imagined. Although there are terrifying moments, years of sweat and tears, and plenty of humbling experiences, it has made me who I am. Jumping into the fear and risk of vesting all of your savings into a new venture from ground zero takes a ton of faith. There’s a lot of sacrifices of charting your own course or owning your own business and how it affects both yourself and all of your relationships. With each career/industry venture transition, I was always faced with a state of reinvention in both personal and professional identity. For example, my pursuit of music in the 11 year band that I was in abruptly ended when our lead singer and close friend tragically passed away during the finalizing of our biggest studio album to date. Some significant deaths within my family during that span truly were an insult to injury. Years later my 13 year marriage would unexpectedly end, along with parting ways with the photography business we had built. I had found myself reestablishing myself as a photographer and eventually led into the modeling industry and youtube venture. Eventually I’d start my menswear line, only to have Covid hit about 6 months into the process of building the brand/company. This was insanely hard because the world was shut down, so I couldn’t get restocks of my menswear pieces, requiring a lare business loan to float the expenses until things opened back up. 4 years later, about 10 days before my second wedding, my now ex-fiancee would suddenly decide she did not want to get married after all and end the relationship. Now, having overcome all of these obstacles and dynamics of life, standing on my own two feet again, I can better manage the unique challenges that come with life, along with owning and operating your own business. In summary, when working for yourself, your personal life tends to blur lines because you are the sole person responsible for your future at any given moment. There is no one else to step in, you ARE the company until you can eventually hire, delegate or sell entirely.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My aim is to provide active men with attainable luxury clothing and a fit like no other. Bridging the gap between designer level quality, reasonable price points and designs that compliment athletic, muscular physiques. I want to give active men(who prioritize their health and well being) with effortless sophistication & style through the simplicity of flattering fits, handsome cohesive designs & amazingly comfortable materials. It shouldn’t be uncomfortable or overly complex to be stylish. What I am most proud of is my ability to adapt and be versatile amidst the challenges and demands that come with so many creative dynamics. I think that in the same token, this is also what sets me apart from others because you have to be wired differently to be entrepreneurial, especially to have any success in a creative or design field. Some friends and colleagues have referred to me as a maven in some ways. Likely because I crossover into quite a few creative formats throughout each year, and have transitioned to a different industry every decade or so.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Go with your gut instincts and don’t make fear-based decisions. Remember to always be prepared practically and financially for at least 6 months of provisions. Stand strong for what you believe in and don’t give in to societal pressures that compromise your core values or beliefs. Don’t project your fears or insecurities upon others. Question everything, do not assume your best interests are being put first by others.
