Sara Locke of Carlsbad on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Sara Locke. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Sara, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I feel more called into action towards self discovery than I have in the past. I’ve been more motivated to cultivate a meaningful life for myself and clearly define what meaningful looks like to me. Life is full of surprises but being able to navigate those with an open heart and open mind is something that I used to fear and now I crave the process of learning and unlearning.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sara Locke, I grew up in the small town of Carlsbad CA. I am an ocean/landscape artist that uses oil paint to capture the colors and movement of water and tropical landscapes. I have always had an appreciation for nature and specifically the beauty surrounding the ocean. I’m an avid surfer and water women so bringing to life paintings that reflect my passion for those activities has been something I’ve tried to emulate throughout my art career. Right now, I work for SPY+ Optics while painting and making art in my free time. The goal is to find the balance between work and play and eventually turning my art and surfing into a collective of sorts

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Fear. Fear has told me I can’t do it. I’ve come to a place in my life where I finally feel fed up with the limiting belief that I can’t or I won’t. I’ve spent a lifetime saying no out of fear. This energy is old news. Life is hard enough on its own and saying no limits the power of expansion. I no longer want to shrink

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
When I realized that my pain is not a weapon that can be used against me. My pain used to keep me stuck and pull me under because I thought I was too broken and deserved suffering. The moment I realized that we are all broken people in a broken world, I felt less alone. Once I removed myself from the victim mindset and stopped focusing on me and my pain, I was finally able to see that it’s not about me. The more I talked to friends, family, and even strangers I felt more empowered to share my story and release the shame I felt around pain. I was able to use it as motivation to fuel my passions and remember that I am not defined by what has happened to me, rather I am proud of my ability to overcome and adapt under challenging circumstances. We are all more resilient and capable than we give ourselves credit for.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
I try to be as authentic as I can in public as I am when I am at home/behind closed doors. Sure, there are days where it might be easier to put on a happy face and pretend but at the end of the day, people crave authenticity and showing up as your full self serves a greater purpose in this life. I’m not one to stray away from hard conversations. Being your authentic self allows others to feel like they can be themselves too. I believe this is the greatest form of love you can give to one another.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop undervaluing myself. I would find a way to travel and I would quit my corporate job.
