Steven Whidbee of Imperial Beach on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Steven Whidbee. Check out our conversation below.

Steven, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of work, the one thing that brings me joy lately would be my family. I can’t wait to go home and enjoy life with them.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Steven Whidbee, my artist name is Whidbee. I am originally from Brooklyn New York, but fell in love with San Diego and decided to stay after serving 9 years in the United States Marine Corps. I am the Owner of Phremynd Clothing, as well as a published Author with books in the children’s genre and adult mental health genre.

What makes my brand and myself interesting is the fact that I’ve established a mindset/world of my own where doubt and fear is something we don’t internalize or let stop us from achieving whatever we dream of.

I’m currently working on two music projects titled Coo World 2 and the Heart Breaka Ep. I’m working on Two books, Rome’s Adventures: School Daze and Let’s be Friends. Lastly, I’m working on my first independent movie script and a tea brand.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I would say the 9 years I served in the military. I got to see the good and bad in people. I got to experience other cultures at the same time gaining an understanding for how important my culture is to the rest of the world. Also, how important love is and how it can create long meaningful relationships with people who are not even blood related.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
A fear that held me back the most in my life until I figured things out would be, the fear of the unknown. I used stress out as a child not knowing where my next meal was going to come from, will I live to see tomorrow, will I be a loser at this game called life, etc. It wasn’t until I embraced the unknown and accepted everything happens for a reason. This thought process has helped me tremendously.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
They would say that my family and friends matter to me, Having a strong foundation and good people around me to keep me grounded/humble matters. Wealth, health, God, knowledge, peace and happiness are the other things that matter to me. My family and friends, once again.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people tell a story of a child who was born into a world full of misery, but found a glimpse of hope that led him to becoming a great man, a great father, a great husband, and a great friend. Tell a story of my love for helping others, my love for animals, and my love for living life. Ending my story off with no matter how rough life got, I stayed focus to accomplishing my goals, only look for the best in people, and thank God for every chapter in my life.
