Alex Packard shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Alex , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I enjoy waking up early to go surfing before work. It allows me to connect with nature, exercise, and clear my mind before the work day ahead of me.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Alex Packard, and I’m the owner of Canvas Services, a marine canvas and upholstery shop. The business was established in 1978, and has had two previous owners, Paul Mitchell and Mike Gavin. I worked for Mike Gavin, who I viewed as a mentor, for several years before taking over the business. I’m still in touch Mike Gavin and Paul Mitchell, who is a big part of the sailing community.
As for my interest in this line of work, I’d grown up around boats all my life and became curious about making custom canvas work, such as dodgers and biminis. This involved not only learning how to sew with a sewing machine, but also learning how to design projects from scratch. Every day is a new and unique challenge that involves problem solving, getting creative, and using my imagination.
A fun historic fact about Canvas Services is that before the harbor hosted America’s Cup, it was known as Commercial Basin, which served as a free mooring location. At the time, those who were moored there for an extended time had their mail sent to Canvas Services, making the canvas shop their unofficial post office.
Canvas Services is a big part of maritime history in San Diego, and I intend to continue its legacy.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I grew up in a household with hardworking parents who instilled a strong work ethic in me. My mother, Valerie Cesmat, was a 2nd grade teacher in the San Diego Unified School District and my father, Mathew Packard, was a VP at St. Vincent De Paul. I always looked up to them for their endless hard work and dedication to giving back to the local community.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
The transition from being an employee to becoming the owner of Canvas Services was a challenging period for me. Instead of just focusing on sewing and installing projects, I was responsible for acquiring new business, building relationships with clients, balancing the books, and more. Although it was difficult at the time, I am proud of myself for persevering and continuing the Canvas Service business.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire my father’s character because he’s a loving, caring, and supportive person who is always looking for ways to help others. Even though he’s retired from a job in which he served his community for many years, he’s still eager and willing to stop in Canvas Services and give me a hand, answering phones, responding to emails, and offering sound advice.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m around water, surfing or sailing. These activities challenge me physically and mentally, while giving me space to clear my head. After a day on the water, I feel refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to tackle whatever comes my way.
