Story & Lesson Highlights with Barbara Jarnes

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Barbara Jarnes. Check out our conversation below.

Barbara, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I am engaged to be married this fall! We met after both losing our longtime spouses a little over three years ago.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Forty years ago, my husband, Norman, and I started a residential cleaning business that would bring us challenges, friendships, headaches, joy, drama, satisfaction, and a business that we could hand down to our daughter and son-in-law. It was based on the principle that “people come first” and the Golden Rule. For this reason we have retained a significant portion of our staff and our clientele for well over two decades.

Our first goal was to provide our clients with homes that would beckon them to relax and enjoy their family time in a serene environment. Our second goal was to provide employment for honest, hard-working individuals with schedules that allow them time with their families as well.

Because of our liability insurance coverage and workers’ compensation, our clients and workers feel protected.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I believed myself to be a shy follower. My experiences as a business owner have brought me “out of my shell” and forced me into more of a leadership role than I ever thought possible when I was younger.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been many of those times. Every time we are short-staffed and schedules are in constant flux and there’s a last-minute cancellation that contributes to a lower revenue for the month, but the bills are just as high as ever! Pushing our way through, staying close to each other and celebrating small victories, makes our family business feel confident that we can conquer most everything.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
That I am a good listener, that I am trustworthy and dedicated to my commitments, and that I have compassion for others.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That my success could be measured in the relationships I fostered rather than the money I made.
