We’re looking forward to introducing you to Betty Schram. Check out our conversation below.
Betty, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Intelligence without application can be wisdom wasted- like a treasure of a book sitting unread on a shelf, and energy without intelligence calls to mind a sports car without a steering wheel…but integrity is a foundation piece when tested that will always prove itself, even if standing alone. However, all three in concert are a potent combination!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I intersect a few worlds! To be brief, I work in both the “arts and sciences” realms as an actress, model, and allied health professional. I’ll lean into the arts side for this conversation. Things are incredibly busy, and I absolutely love that. I’m currently filming in a viral vampire, post-apocalyptic horror series. I’m really enjoying discovering what is going to happen to the characters as the episodes are released to the cast and can’t wait to bring this story to life. The team assembled for the cast and crew has been so fun to work with, they make long shooting days go so quickly! I’ve had the opportunity to train for marital arts choreography in preparation for my character, and I loved learning from the stunt team. Also in the works is a feature film, a vertical anthology, a short with a quietly powerful story I’m so honored to portray, and a photo shoot adventure. I love looking forward to sharing that creative space and energy with my friends and colleagues.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My immediate response about who taught me the most about work is my dad. I grew up watching him run his own business in the agriculture community, and we used to have our best conversations at his desk discussing the shifting markets and regulations involved in so many aspects of the industry, under a vehicle performing it’s maintenance, or in the combine running harvest. He was the first to the job and the last to leave. He lead by example and he set the pace. I developed an early appreciation for professionalism from him, and I’m grateful for the work ethic he modeled.
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
I think it was in recognizing what I could influence in the situation that would otherwise leave one feeling helpless. As long as I can remember, I was the defender and the protector. If there were a bully, I’d be between them and their target. Fear had to take a backseat to the mission: protect. I wasn’t a very big kid, but I had a big spirit.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
I look for authenticity! If something is authentic to you it isn’t a fad, and if it isn’t authentic, why participate? Analyze the subject matter and determine if you can align with it, if it aligns with you and your values, if it fuels or interfaces with what moves with you and your design. If so, you’ve found foundation elements with which to work.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely. It’s really important that one is immersed in “the work,” whatever that may be for them, for the sake of the work, the passion, to exercise the gift of creating. This is the art of art. If it were to become recognized and find value with others, that too is a gift, but it must not be the impetus of creation. Praise can be a rewarding aftershock, but the power of that earthquake is at it’s core the deep work under the surface- the tectonic plates shifting and moving powerfully. Ground breaking work starts from within.
