Story & Lesson Highlights with Brady Rein of Poway

Brady Rein shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Brady, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me? Well, I wake up at 4:30am, open the doors to my gym at 5:30am, start my first class at 6am. After that, I teach 2 more classes, and I’m done with my first half of the day by 10am. From that point, I train myself and workout. I do long distance triathlon to stay in shape and keep myself healthy. I have lunch everyday at home with my wife, then I go back to the gym at 1:30 or 2:30 depending on the day, and teach 3 more classes, until 6pm or 7pm. I do that Monday – Friday. I only have 2 classe on Saturday, then I get a bit of a weekend.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Brady Rein, I am the owner and Head Coach at r3 Boxing and Rock Steady Boxing Poway. I have been teaching boxing for 20 years, boxed professionally and now I use my experience to train Youth, Adults and people with Parkinson’s disease

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My dad, 100 percent. He has owned his own business in Colorado for over 40 years. I remember waking up with him, going to the gym, going to school, then hanging out at his shop everyday after school. Without knowing it at the time, it showed me how to be my own business owner and work for myself. The sacrifice he made, especially during the holidays when he would work late, to make sure that we were always provided for.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, and it was not too long ago. I have my wife to thank for the push. It was when I started my Rock Steady Boxing for Parkinson’s. I didn’t have anyone walk through the doors for at least 2 months. I was defeated. I didn’t want to keep it going because it felt like a lost cause. I was working at a different gym, so it wasn’t my only income. I wanted to quit. My wife (girlfriend at the time) told me to keep at it. I had my first person walk through the doors shortly after that and the rest is history.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, I am wild and crazy all the time. I’m a big goofball. I like to have fun in class and dance around and make people laugh, but I am very serious about the way I want things done. I have a system and I expect things to be done the right way. I am the same way outside the gym as well. I’m a big goofball, but when something needs to get done, I am hyperfocused on getting it finished.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am definitely doing what I was born to do. I was never the kid that did things I was supposed to do. I wasn’t a troublemaker, I just didn’t listen and did things my way. I failed, A LOT! But, I learned. I didn’t like it when I was told what to do. I had to do it my way.
