Story & Lesson Highlights with Brian Blindauer of Indio, CA

We recently had the chance to connect with Brian Blindauer and have shared our conversation below.

Brian, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
3D printing. I guess it kind of has started to become work, because I am making a side hustle out of it. It’s become a lot of fun making new stuff that are gag gifts all the way to actual functional things that help out every day life. I’m also now learning how to design things myself and that’s a whole new journey in itself.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a landscape photographer based in the greater Palm Springs area. I enjoy traveling to all kinds of beautiful areas to photography the nature and landscapes that, that place provides. When I’m out on the road I’m unstoppable trying to find these beautiful places. I can average 500 miles of driving a day with a hike and a couple of photography stops squeezed. I will go any distance to capture that beautiful landscape.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I always thought I would end up being an entomologist. Insects are always fascinating to me as well as most animals, but I loved learning about insects and catching them. I also raised some when I was younger. I really did think I would end up being an entomologist because of that love, but it turned out to be the love of adventure instead.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
A few years back I drove cross country to Florida. After arriving in Florida the weather became extremely bad and I had some bad car issues. I was alone and 2000 miles from home. It was the first time life hit really hard on a road trip. I camped next to a lake and had a really rough night. After making it through that night and realizing I have to figure this out, because it’s just me I grew stronger and it prepared me for more times in the future where anything could happen.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
As a photographer that every picture you put out has to be perfect. I often do post non perfect images now. The moment those photos were taken in were a beautiful moment and it’s a memory I enjoy so I want to share it.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
No service, beautiful scene in front of me, camera setup on a tripod and good friends sharing that moment. Nothing is better.
