Story & Lesson Highlights with Briana (BEC Magaña of La Mesa

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Briana (BEC Magaña. Check out our conversation below.

Briana (BEC, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I’m most proud of rebuilding my confidence and self-worth. No one really saw the breakdown, but I carried the weight and still chose to show up for myself every day. I’ve built a version of myself that doesn’t rely on outside validation. Quietly healing, learning, and leveling up—mentally and emotionally.

I’ve also worked really hard on building my discipline and emotional resilience. It’s not something you can see on paper, but it is put to use behind every project I do within my work and everyday life.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Briana (BEC) Magaña, and I’m a tattoo artist. I specialize in black & grey and color realism and I’m all about creating meaningful art that connects with people on a deeper level.

My brand is rooted in creative freedom, authenticity, and making people feel seen. I love blending fine art with emotion—whether that’s through tattooing, storytelling, or just being real about the journey. What makes my work unique is the balance between technical skill and personal connection—I don’t just tattoo on people, I work with them to bring their vision to life. I take a lot of pride in the connection I build with my clients and the trust they put in me to help them achieve the style and look they want.

Right now, I’m working on expanding my studio presence, taking on more custom projects, and continuing to grow in both my art and as a person. I believe in building a space where creativity thrives and people leave feeling more confident than when they walked in.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My husband saw me clearly before I could see myself. When I was lost in doubt or struggling to believe in my own worth or contemplating career changes, he held space for me and believed in my strength. He didn’t just cheer me on—he supported my art and tattoo career in real, tangible ways. He bought me supplies when I had none and created dedicated art spaces so I could grow and create freely. He studied art with me, drew with me , helped furnish and build my tattoo studio with me. His faith and support helped me start seeing myself the way he always did — capable, creative, worthy, and enough. (Thanks for being the best Alfonso.)

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me what real strength looks like—how to keep going even when nothing feels certain. It has taught me to appreciate the little things and find peace in the struggle.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
A cultural value I protect at all costs is respect.
Not just surface-level politeness—but deep, intentional respect for people’s stories, their bodies, their boundaries, and their culture. In my work as a tattoo artist, I hold space for people’s vulnerability. It’s sacred, and I treat it that way. I also carry the value of community; looking out for others, sharing knowledge, and lifting each other up instead of competing. That’s the kind of energy I grew up with, and I bring it into everything I do.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I’m finally doing what I was born to do. For a while, I followed the path I thought I should; I studied psychology, worked in mental health, and tried to make sense of life through helping others. But deep down, I’ve always been an artist. I was in art groups as a teen, constantly inspired by creativity, but I put it on hold to be “practical.”
After college, I found my way back to art through tattooing, and it felt like coming home. Now, I get to blend both worlds-art and understanding people-and I truly do believe I am where I am supposed to be in life.
