Story & Lesson Highlights with Greg Cali of Encinitas

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Greg Cali. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Greg, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
The grand opening of my art gallery, TheCaliLife Gallery, has been one of my proudest moments recently. Creating a space to showcase my art, where people can explore, connect, and purchase pieces, has truly been a dream come true.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Greg Cali. Photographer, visual storyteller, and founder of TheCaliLife Gallery. My work is rooted in a deep love for California’s natural beauty, light, and culture. After years behind the camera capturing everything from sweeping landscapes to intimate portraits, I recently opened TheCaliLife Gallery as a dedicated space to showcase not only my own work but also curated pieces from other emerging and established artists.

The gallery is more than just a place to view art, it’s a space to experience creativity, connect with community, and celebrate the richness of life through visual expression. Right now, I’m focused on building a dynamic, evolving collection and hosting events that invite people into the creative process. This has been a dream come true, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
What often breaks the bonds between people is a lack of communication, unspoken expectations, and fear. The fear of being misunderstood, vulnerable, or hurt. When we stop truly listening or assume we already know someone’s story, disconnection begins to grow.

What restores those bonds is honesty, empathy, and presence. When we slow down, open up, and choose to meet each other with curiosity instead of judgment, healing can happen. Sometimes, it is as simple as showing up, consistently and with heart.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me patience in a way success never could. When things didn’t flow, when the work didn’t sell, when the vision felt far off, when the support wasn’t there, I had to sit with myself and ask, Why do I create? It stripped away the noise and the ego, and what was left was a deep-rooted need to express, to connect, to keep going regardless of applause.

Success is beautiful, but it can distract you. Suffering clarified me. It taught me that building something meaningful, like TheCaliLife Gallery, isn’t about avoiding pain, it’s about turning it into art, into space, into something others can feel and find themselves in too.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
presence is everything. Whether I’m behind the camera, curating a show, or having a conversation, the energy I bring matters more than the words I say. People may not remember the details, but they always remember how something made them feel. That’s the invisible thread I follow.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. How do you know when you’re out of your depth?
I know I’m out of my depth when there’s no clear path forward, when I look around and realize there’s no blueprint, no one ahead of me doing exactly what I’m trying to do. As an entrepreneur and artist, that feeling comes often. It used to scare me, but now I see it as a signal that I’m exactly where I need to be.

Being out of your depth doesn’t mean you’re in the wrong place, it means you’re growing into the version of yourself who can handle what’s next. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s also where the magic happens. So I’ve learned to trust that things will fall into place, and that I’m becoming more capable every day, even when it doesn’t feel like it.
