We recently had the chance to connect with Jakob John and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Jakob, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is a normal day like for you right now?
In the studio everyday (7 days a week), for at least 10-16 hrs a day. And been doing that for about 5 years now and life from doing that has changed tremendously.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Jakob John, the Owner and Founder of Soul ShakeDown Studios. We are now the largest independent studio in North County San Diego after over 5 years of operating in San Marcos. We work with over 200 artists monthly and have had the pleasure of working on some of the biggest records that come out of the city. Also creating classes that are affordable for the public to learn how to start producing hit records of their own.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
First and foremost my parents, they allowed me to run the studio in their garage for 2 years to get my feet off the ground. Also, my Uncle told me a long time ago when I was in my band to quit and to keep making beats. At first I thought he was crazy because the band I was in at the time was doing good but now looking back I couldn’t be more than grateful.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
Ive learned that failure is the only true way to growth and it’s the last thing that we can be afraid of. Any one who’s ever been the greatest in life has also failed more than the average, but that is what makes them great. If you’re afraid of failure then you have to realize what the definition of failure is to you. My Definition of failure is not whether it works on the first try or not, its whether you gave up or not before you figured it out.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That all you have to be is talented. I have seen sooo many of the most talented people ever not make it in the industry because their own will power. Hard work beats talent the day talent doesn’t work hard. I continue to tell myself this everyday I walk into the studio.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I genuinely love what I do everyday and did everything I can to help the people around me get to the next level that they wanted to get to. Whether it was an artist that was trying to build their sound and didn’t know where to go next. Or a talented producer looking for placements. I try to do everything I can to help put the people around me in the position to win every time.
