Jon Ray shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Jon, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately I’ve been enjoying working on my art projects. I recently began painting a mural on a wall in my backyard using VR goggles to trace the design. I love learning new ways to create and enhancing the process with technology.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I started PaintGreen in 2007 when I moved to San Diego. I’m proud of my team for doing high quality work and taking great care of our customers, so much so that we are the highest rated painting company in San Diego with over 600 5-Star reviews. Now that we’ve created a solid foundation of quality and service, we are working to scale the business and find ways to help even more homeowners.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I realized my power of self-will and determination when I was able to overcome my nicotine addiction in my mid-20’s. I had attempted a couple times, but on the third try I found a source of motivation within myself that made it impossible to fail again. I made up my mind and knew that no matter what tricks my brain tried to pull on me that I would not smoke another cigarette out of addiction.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I nearly gave up on building my business after a pretty big setback in 2013. Rather than accept defeat and throwing in the towel, though, I regrouped, read a bunch of books on leadership and building a business, then re-launched my business with renewed energy and ideas. Today I’m so glad that I didn’t give up on myself and instead turned a pretty big problem into a lesson that helped catapult me into a higher understanding.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Authenticity is something I am constantly striving for. I like to think I am close to the same person privately as I am publicly, but I think anybody who claims they are is probably fooling themself.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
I already regret not taking better care of my body during my young adult years. Regular exercise and eating healthy foods is so important and deeply affects every aspect of life. On the other hand, I probably wouldn’t appreciate my current health if I had not let it suffer. Sometimes it takes dark days to appreciate the light.
