Joy Galicia shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Joy, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Waking up, taking my dog out and making a cup of iced coffee. I get ready and head to the gym for an early morning workout.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Joy, and I’m a professional bridal and special events makeup artist. I specialize primarily in makeup, but I also offer hair services to provide a complete look for my clients.
My main focus is working with brides and bridal parties, but I also provide makeup for special events, photo shoots, and corporate functions.
What I love most about what I do is the opportunity to connect with new people and help them feel confident and beautiful on some of the most important days of their lives. Creating a personalized, polished look for each client is truly a passion of mine.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who taught me the most about work are my parents. Growing up, I watched them balance so many responsibilities with dedication and grace. They taught me the importance of showing up, staying consistent, and always giving your best, no matter the task. Even though neither were in the beauty industry, the values they instilled in me, like discipline, patience, and treating people with kindness, have shaped how I approach my work with clients.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self it would be: “Trust yourself, you are more capable than you think.”
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That success only comes with a huge following or working with celebrities. The truth is, some of the most meaningful and successful work happens behind the scenes. Helping a bride feel radiant on her wedding day, calming someone’s nerves before a photoshoot, or simply making someone smile when they see their finished look in the mirror.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes. Of course its always nice to be recognized, but for me, the motivation comes from within. I take pride in my work and in the experience I give to my clients. I genuinely and truly love what I do. Whether someone praises it or not, I know when I’ve done my best and that’s what matters most to me. I want people to feel seen, I want them to feel beautiful and cared for, and I don’t need recognition to feel fulfilled by that. The joy and confidence I see in someone’s eyes when I hand them the mirror is more rewarding than any compliment.
