Story & Lesson Highlights with Justin Scher of Greater San Diego

We recently had the chance to connect with Justin Scher and have shared our conversation below.

Justin, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I wake up with my wife and 3 dogs. We ALL have coffee on the couch and we take them for a long walk after we get our buzz on. Then my wife and I head to the gym to get our day started right…

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Justin Scher and I’ve been a professional Dog Behavioral Therapist, Bark Busters Home Dog Training for almost 20 years. I teach people how to communicate to their dogs in their dogs language and how to better understand their dogs psychology to help them resolve very challenging behavior issues that they haven’t been able to resolve on their own. I recently did a TEDxTalk about this subject.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Stressing about things that I have no control over. It’s driven me to be the best possible friend, husband, dog behaviorist, etc but at a cost. It’s cost me a lot of peace, happiness and appreciation for what I’ve accomplished and who I’ve become. But relinquishing these stresses and acknowledging what I can and cannot control, it’s allowed me to be present and appreciate the simplicity of life rather than take it all for granted.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
My fear of failure. It’s been a blessing and a curse. It drives me to never be satisfied with where I’m at or what I’ve accomplished but with age(currently 53 yrs. Old) I’ve come to a profound realization that everything tends to work out and I’d wasted a lot of time worrying and stressing about things that ultimately worked out or were great life lessons.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, I am who I am and I always represent that. From my perspective, the most important thing is honesty and compassion and that comes through in every aspect of my life.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If immortality were real, what would you build?
A dog rescue facility.
