We recently had the chance to connect with Luciano Demasi and have shared our conversation below.
Luciano, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity is the most important aspect in both business and personal life. People often state that “in love and business everything is allowed”. I strongly believe that this is a false statement. If integrity is maintained, in the long run, we always win as individuals but also we improve society. We all want a better world. Thus, we need to act in our everyday life with Integrity.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I love many aspects of life. Aerospace Engineering and (infrared) photography are among my strongest passions. During my business hours I conduct research on aerodynamics, structures, and aeroelasticity. I am interested to know how the wings of an airplane deform under the aerodynamic loads and how the deformation affects the aerodynamic performance. I am also interested in methods that can be used to numerically determine if a structure can withstand the prescribed loads.
I have been working on variational methods to achieve these efficient and accurate analytical/numerical methods.
I also work on unsteady aerodynamics, with the goal to present tools that can be used by industry to design the modern airplanes.
On the personal side, I love exploring nature, meditating in front of a breathtaking view. I love to record this beauty with my infrared camera, my best companion of my trips. I see the incredible beauty of our fragile Earth and I imagine what the image can look under the infrared light. This also serves as permanent memory of the emotions. Sharing my work in art galleries is also very rewarding for me, especially when the viewers also feel the emotion I had when I took the photo in the first place.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
There were many “bifurcation points” which shaped how I see the world. One of them was when I decided to come to United States, to pursue my dreams, to become a professor of Aerospace Engineering. The extraordinary beauty of the natural wonders of United States also brought in me the desire to explore photography and my love for science made me explore the “infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum” for surreal images that I love
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering, struggle, and defeat are the most important aspects in our journey. Only the defeat can teach us how challenging, and to which extent, a situation is. Once we know this aspect we can tailor our effort and eventually win. It is practically impossible to achieve our goals in our first attempt. That is practically never the case. We need to be resilient.
Also, suffering makes our success taste great!
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I am the same person with family, friends, and general people. I do not trust people who have multiple faces.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I followed my passions for the entire life. When I was in high school nobody advised me to pursue studies in Aerospace Engineering…But I knew that I was born to do science and mathematics. Thus, I never listened to many people and I kept fighting for my dreams. That is how I moved from a small town of Italy to the finest city of United States!
