We’re looking forward to introducing you to NSTY ARMY. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning NSTY, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
Wandering.
For me, I think wandering brings me more joy than walking a straight path. Usually means that I don’t get to stop and “smell the roses” as some would say. I like to explore new ideas, projects, feelings, and friends. And wandering, gives me a chance to slow down and seek out those opportunities and ideas as they come. Life, is about wonder. We suppose to find new connections to the planet and with other people.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello!
I’m The Prez from the San Diego based, NSTY ARMY and a part of The Please Excuse My Potty Mouth Podcast!
What makes us unique? Well, everything!
We started as a group of friends that worked together, hanging out, playing video games. Which one day, bloomed into making merchandise. Hoodies and Tshirts. After that, and a few vendors later, we’ve created a huge community! Offer A LOT more merchandise that shops world wide, created magazines that highlights not only our friends but their businesses and side hustles as well. With over 30K followers on Instagram, it’s also granted us the ability to host charity events where we can give back to our city and donate to a few nation wide charities.
From there, we’ve collaborated with Barbie’s Baddies Customs, OMGtheChiisme Podcast, SDCannablogger, Real Babes Magazine, and Top Shelf Magazine!
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
This is a powerful question. Because in this business of merchandise and content creation, there’s not just one moment, there’s 100s if not 1000s of them.
You do 4 favors but as soon as you can’t do the 5th … a rap lyric that I’ve learned to live by.
There’s always a moment where you look at someone tho at rather be selfish and not put the business first. Always a moment where you depend on someone and they let you down. Moments where you thought you can trust and believe in someone and find out rather quickly, they didn’t hold you in the same regard..
In those moments, you have to realize, the grind don’t stop, the dream don’t stop. There’s always work to be done. We can only hope that you can have someone(s) in your corner. And that’s where I’ve been lucky.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
Oh there’s been many, many times in this business where a long time ago, happened more often than not. Times where you see people for who and what they are. The let downs, the people that talk behind your back, the people with their hand out but offer you grief in return.
May be a late lesson for me but, one day, the pain just … stopped. And transferred into power. A overwhelming and cleaning power. One day, and let’s hope it’s a lot sooner for you than it was for me, you will stop hurting. You would stop sitting up all hours throughout the night wondering how to fix people’s opinions of you then you will see, it’s time to get busy. Focused. On yourself and whatever you set out to do. And let me tell you, what a feeling.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Everything happens overnight.
I think that’s the biggest lie anyone can tell.
Your dream takes work. A LOT of work. At times, you have to work even harder and longer than your 9 to 5. And you may not see fruit from it in a week, months, or even years. Many many years.
But that fruit WILL come when it’s ripe and time for you to pick it.
Just hold on. Be patient.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
Friendship. Brother and Sisterhood.
I would like to think that we’ve created a community and a place to where people can be themselves. And more! From myself, and The Doc of The Almighty NSTY ARMY to Evie over at Barbie’s Baddies, and Molly with Real Babes Magazine, we set out to achieve what we knew would be a long road. But we also knew that we can make it. So many friends and family we’ve met along the way.
That’s something I can’t let go. So when the day comes to where I do retire, I will be replaced with someone that holds my same values and can bring new twist and ideas to what we’ve built. I owe that to everyone. But I will miss being at the helm of it.
