We’re looking forward to introducing you to Shari Zolna. Check out our conversation below.
Shari, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
People sometimes think that because we run a yacht charter company, it must be all luxury and leisure — like the boat just runs itself. The truth is, it’s a seven-day-a-week operation. We’re hands-on with every detail, often working late into the evenings to make sure every charter feels effortless for our guests. It’s a lot of work behind the scenes, but it’s work we genuinely love.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Shari Zolna, co-owner of Zolna Yachts in San Diego. My husband Amos and I started the company after years of sharing a love for boating and hosting. We operate the Nerissa, a 73-foot motor yacht that hosts private celebrations, corporate outings, weddings, and holiday parties on the bay. Our focus is creating effortless, beautifully run experiences with warm, genuine hospitality. This past summer, we also introduced a small live-music series aboard Nerissa, bringing guests together for unforgettable sunset concerts on the water. What began as our shared passion has become a way to share the magic of San Diego Bay with others — one cruise at a time.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My parents. They showed me that real work is about consistency, care, and pride in what you do — not shortcuts. That lesson has carried into Zolna Yachts, where every day is hands-on and personal. I’ve learned that creating effortless experiences for others takes passion, teamwork, and a lot of behind-the-scenes dedication.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Honestly, the toughest times have taught me the most. Running a business isn’t always smooth sailing — there are long days, unexpected setbacks, and moments where you wonder if it’s all going to work out. But those challenges have made me stronger, more patient, (well, I try to be patient) and a lot more grounded. I’ve learned to stay calm, trust the process, and remember why I started in the first place — to create something meaningful for people on the water.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That luxury sells itself. The truth is, it’s the people behind it who make the experience special. You can have the prettiest yacht or the best view in San Diego, but what people really remember is how they felt — the care, the laughter, the ease of it all. I think our industry sometimes forgets that hospitality isn’t about status; it’s about connection. That’s what we focus on at Zolna Yachts — creating those moments that feel effortless, genuine, and memorable.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say that I built something that made others happy — that I brought people together, created memories, and cared deeply about every detail. I want to be remembered for doing things the right way, not the easy way, and for always showing up with heart. If the people who’ve cruised with us, worked with us, or shared moments on the bay think of those times fondly, that would mean everything to me. In the end, I just hope the spirit of what we’ve created on the Nerissa keeps sailing on long after I do.
