Story & Lesson Highlights with Skye Walker of Encinitas

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Skye Walker. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Skye, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Creating art has always made me lose track of time. When I really am invested in the painting, drawing or mural- I get so absorbed in the process and the joy of creating art that I completely lose track of time. I’ve definitely turned to art to find myself again for sure. My father passed away in 2022 so I’ve spent a lot of time painting and creating art to reconnect with myself and with him as he taught me about art and was my biggest fan (aside from my mom and sister). Now, whenever I check out and just create new art- I’m checking in with my soul but also quietly connecting with my dad at the same time.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Skye Walker and I’m an artist, muralist and designer based out of North County San Diego. While I love creating work on a small scale- creating large-scale murals for communities across the USA is one of my favorite things to do in life. Seeing art on a big wall commands people’s attention and helps elevate towns and communities in obvious and subtle ways.

My art is inspired by Mother Nature and her endless beauty and glorious landscapes. The subject matter, colors, animals, locations and grandeur of our earth is just incredible. Also, connecting our human experience to our connection to nature is paramount to my art as we are all intertwined in this huge earthly experience and story.

I work with a large array of companies, developers, non-profits and brands to create original murals, art installations and signature artist series for different apparel, merch and brand collaborations.

While I’m invested in the work I’m currently invested in, I’m always looking towards the future and what’s coming next. Creating art is exciting because even though you may have an idea of what you’re doing, there’s always room to change, grow and evolve as an artist.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My father and mother always saw who I was very clearly. Whenever I doubted myself, my art or my path, they were the ones to remind me of who I am and the powers that are inside me to become the man I wanted to be. Their love and support in my life are unparalleled and will always resonate through me forever.

Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
Whenever I go home to visit my family in Oregon during the summer, I am always taken back to my days right before I started college at Oregon State University. More specifically, I went to a pre-college visual arts program called JumpstART which I earned my 4 year OSU scholarship through. I distinctly remember being on campus, at night, with the warm summer breezes and talking to the other students in the program about art, our futures and thinking about what lied ahead for me.
I was excited and electrified to be going to college with a scholarship- and the potential for what was coming was endless!

When I’m in Corvallis, OR in the summer- all those same hopeful thoughts and feelings come back to me when the warm evening breezes envolope me… I’ll look up at the stars and start to dream of the future and the art I will create…. did create and will continue to create. In those moments, I’m 19 again and about to set off on my path as an artist in this world. No one knows about those little thoughts until now 🙂

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public, social media and online version of Skye Walker, I believe, is a pretty authentic representation of who I am as a person, artist and businessman. There’s already too many fake things, people, attitudes, and A.I. in the world… I’m not trying to be one of them! I do strive to be as authentic as possible and I hope that translates in person. While it’s important that that it also translates through social media, the in-person public and private version of myself is 100% who I am.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
There is a moment of peace and Zen happens for me every time I finish a large mural or commission painting that I’ve put a lot of time into. Once I put down the brush or spray paint and look at the art and think to myself, yup- you did it. A moment of peace rolls over me knowing all the work, stress, sweat and angst to complete the art is past and all that remains is the art I created for others to see. The peace doesn’t last as life rolls on. But for a little bit… I’m at peace.
