Story & Lesson Highlights with Taylor Henderson of North Park

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Taylor Henderson. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Taylor , it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Who are you learning from right now?
I am learning from Stoicism. I am learning to focus on what is in my control, and to accept what is not in my control.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I currently work as the Marketing and PR Manager for a large entertainment arena in San Diego; The 9-5 role.

I am also the owner and Creative Director of a unisex, environmentally conscious clothing label called ‘Flavors Studio’ (formally known as Flavors Creative Group).

So, after my 9-5, I clock in for my “5-9” and create garments, patterns, art, and accessories along side a local seamstress. This brings me the most joy and gets me through my day to day.

I really enjoy skateboarding and analog photography. I just became a member of the American Photographic Artists and I am excited to be apart of the San Diego chapter.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Victimizing my perspective.

I now have the realization that the world is harsh, not just towards me. I realize that most success comes from who you know, but to not force those relationships. Lastly, focusing on finding joy in the process of creating art and fashion design, instead of focusing on the monetary value, has set me free.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Once a week, I think about going into the forest and never returning to civilization. But I am determined to keep going, and in the hardships that make me want to give up, I have found my true self and strength. I always remind myself that without pain and hardships, we would not know the true definition of joy.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
Stay off TikTok and think for myself. Create and wear what I want, not what other people tell me is cool. And I stay away from fast fashion at all cost; if you think the oil industry is bad, look into fashion waste.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I believe this is already the case. Not to be a downer but most people who know me, know I have played the underdog role the majority of my life. And I think it is ok to feel that way without a negative connotation attached. Some people just have it, some people have to work for it- my experience being the latter. But changing my mindset has really opened doors for me and gotten me out of the spiral feeling that I am not good enough.
