Story & Lesson Highlights with William K

We recently had the chance to connect with William K and have shared our conversation below.

William, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What battle are you avoiding?
The AI and art discussion. There’s soooo many people jumping on the anti AI bandwagon, but those are the same people who created filters they sold for photo editing software, or the same ones who used to be big in stock photo as an income and.. a million other things. There are also those who are jumping on the AI bandwagon, but creating things that people just don’t want.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is William, and I am a street photographer. If you want to call it a brand, my brand would be Mundane Skirmish. Mundane Skirmish it s bit more a philosphical understanding of street photography, perhaps a bit discriptive. It’s actually horrible as a brand name because people sort of read it, and mentally get hung up for second on what it’s supposed to mean or indicate.. and then walk away.

It’s not unique, as someone else probably does it, but all of the photography is black and white, done on prime lens, minimal edits and mostly San Diego. There’s more to describe it, at least how it’s mentally approached, but that is the biggest thing to know.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Probably, most likely, spending time in a warzone. Seeing how people change understress, how they react, living in a hostile enviroment, being isolated from the outside world, becoming very introspective. There wasn’t one moment, but rather a series of moments that both chipped away at and pushed into a mold, the way I understood people, and the world.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
The value of easy. Easy things often go by in life with out people being thankful. It often takes a situation of being denied that easy thing to make you realize the value of it.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
To answer a question with a question, what is a real me? Real-ness is something that is subjective and the definition of it, probably hard to nail down. Do I hold back in public? Sure. Do I act differently in public, sure. But do I completely act differently, that’s not clear, but mostly likely not.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Taking photos. It’ll take years of work to compile enough to make something that may actually pay. It’s not my goal, it’s not really a target, but would like to see something of value come out of this.
