Story & Lesson Highlights with Yung Mhoon of El Cajon

Yung Mhoon shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Yung , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I am proud of myself for diving into video editing. I have also been learning how to mix and master my own songs. I love working with other artists but learning how to do some of these things on my own will help me improve immensely as an artist. By learning how to edit my own videos I can really bring my own visualizations to reality. Learning how to mix and master my own songs will help me understand music better and become a better artist. Years ago I would’ve thought hey I could never really do this on the level the other people can but if I keep practicing the sky is the limit.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello my name is Yung Mhoon, I’m a 26 year-old artist from San Diego, California. I’m a mom before anything, in my free time I enjoy making music, editing videos, spending time with my kids/ my family, and even creating videos with my kids too for their YouTube channel. I’m also a CEO of the brand I created @sdtripperz this is a brand for San Diego lovers whose focus is on spreading psychedelic awareness and awareness of the dangers of fentanyl. I know it’s important to spread some awareness on this issue after so many young people have lost their lives. Fentanyl is sometimes in street products and people don’t know which causes them to overdose and die in some cases. The Sd Tripperz promotes psychedelic use while being cautious, test yo productz and fuck fentanyl is some of the messages we spread. One of my biggest influences and inspirations in music is the Grateful Dead. I hope to keep the psychedelic generation alive into the next generation. My music and mission is to open minds and create a better world with love, kindness, and expanded consciousness.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
Both my parents have taught me the importance of working hard, how your decisions today affect where you are tomorrow. My mom grew up in a poor neighborhood in Los Angeles worked really hard to become an amazing Latina law professor. My mom broke through many barriers as a woman and a Latina and she’s one of my biggest influences. My mom taught me the importance of being a strong independent woman and an amazing mother. My dad has been a blessing in my life and he’s always been there for me and my kids he also showed me the importance of loving sports and being athletic which has helped me become a healthy adult. My dad has also showed me what it means to work hard and how if you sacrifice when you’re younger you can live great as you get older. Also a lot of my DJ friends and music friends have showed me how practice can manifest into real talent. Shout out to my brother for showing me what it means to be a good friend and always showing love. Shout out to my sister for being an overall great influence as a big sister and for being kind, she taught me to always follow your dreams and your own path. Last but not least, shout out to my children because they showed me that being a mother is the hardest thing I will probably ever go through but I would do it over and over again because I love them so much. They make my life so much better. I really feel like my children have saved my life and given me something to really live for.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
When I was a kid I used to think about how god was created and it made me feel really uneasy. So I would pray and that would make me feel better as I got older I realized this quote from the Bible made me feel better btw I’m not super religious or anything but it made me see things different. I am the alpha and Omega I am the beginning and the end. This message hit me hard because I realized like God’s the beginning of the world and the end of the world like the beginning of creation and the end of creation which is infinite. Learning this knowledge helped me see life differently. Anytime I felt like I was alone I know I wasn’t really alone I could talk to God within my heart. I was raised in a Christian family but I am more of a spiritual person now. I started studying different aspects of spirituality when I was 12 years old. I realized a lot of religions speak of connecting with a higher power which lives within us and around us in every living thing. This higher power is referred to as a god but it is also the energy within us all. I’m grateful to have a higher power I can talk to you and to help me through everything. I’m really into learning about chakras – energy systems within the body, I also love learning about frequencies I use them often in my music and at home to create a higher vibration. I also see psychedelic as a tool to help expand consciousness and heal traumas. Overall I’ve had many moments in my life when I’ve been afraid but God was always there for me and helped me through everything. I give thanks and praise every day that I made it through all of the challenges I’ve made it through.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I believe you can have anything you want in this world if you work hard and if you believe in yourself. I don’t appreciate the limitations that society puts on us from a very young age and I think it’s important to break out of those boxes and barriers. I’m committed to creating the best life for my children and my family, I will do anything it takes to make this happen, while keeping my morals. One thing I believe in is faith over fear, so even though you have all these fears about how you’re gonna make some shit happen your faith has to be stronger. You don’t have to know every step to get where you want to be you just have to believe in something higher than yourself. You have to believe that you’re capable of creating a life of your dreams and lean into that faith every single day. Use visualization, journaling, praying, whatever it takes for you personally to really believe it and feel it within yourself and your vibration.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I wanna leave a lasting impact that helps change the world in a positive way. I I’m going to leave her impact by being a good example to the people around me always giving and receiving fully to the best of my ability. I want to get back to people in need and make this world a better place. I want everyone to genuinely care about each other and about the planet because it’s our home. I pray everyone will take care of themselves and do everything with positive intentions. Even if just a few people have a change in mindset that can make all the difference. Through my music I try to spread the message of being different and being yourself. How beautiful it is to be you. You don’t have to do everything perfectly, you don’t have to have everything figured out, but at least try your best and every time you’re gonna get better.
