Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Isabelle.
Hi Emily, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In the midst of the pandemic, like so many I was racked with uncertainty and anxiety about what may come. As an avid traveler and outdoor adventurer who was confined to my home, I needed a creative outlet for both my discomfort and longing for the outside world. I discovered surreal landscape digital collage as a medium and felt called to learn. Over the course of the spring and summer of 2020, I played around with photoshop, learning by doing which is my favorite way to learn. Surreal landscape digital collage was the perfect medium for me as it allowed me to incorporate some of my favorite landscapes from places I have traveled to already and places I still dream of exploring, along with a surreal element which satisfied the imaginative daydreamer in me. Making art was such a comfort to me, it made me feel empowered and free, and I thought that perhaps if I shared my work with others, it might do the same for some of them. I shared some of my first collage pieces on my personal Instagram account and was overwhelmed by the positive response. I couldn’t believe that my art had resonated with so many individuals and was surprised by the immediate interest in purchasing my art. I was humbled by the requests but had never created with the intent to sell – and certainly had no idea how to do so.
By happy accident, I dove into learning about the business side of producing art for sale, partnering with local print shops in my community, and set up a shop – and so dreamfringe, my surreal digital collage art business, was born. In a rather dark time in my life, I found something that excited me and filled me up every day – dreamfringe was my light. My business is now just over a year old and I’m still learning a lot but I’m in love with every part of it. In addition to being able to connect with others through art, I love being able to share my story with folks who feel stuck in their own lives and who fear sharing what they love with the world. I’ve always stood by the idea that even if 99% of the people who I share something I’ve made with absolutely hate it, the 1% who feel a connection to that art always make it worth it.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
When starting something brand new, there will always be challenges, but I’m a big believer in starting before you’re ready. You just have to start, and you will learn as you go! When I started creating art, I had done so solely to create, I had never anticipated starting a business. When the need to launch a business became clear, learning all of the ins and outs of what business management looked like and balancing being the creative director, CFO, head of marketing, and every other possible role, it took a lot of trial and error. I have made a lot of mistakes along the way and have grown so much from them. As I continue to scale my business and balance every other aspect of my life, I anticipate new challenges will arise, and I look forward to learning from them when they come!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a surreal landscape digital collage artist. Think cut and paste magazines from your youth, but using photoshop and super funky! As an avid hiker, I am most inspired by the mountain ranges and desertscapes that I’ve come to love and those are clear influences in my work. My biggest sellers are psychedelic collages with elements of Moab, Utah, which is one of my all-time favorite places on earth. I am most proud of my ability to create the surreal spaces I wish existed using elements we find in our world. I think my ability to connect with my customers on a personal level sets me apart from other creators. Art to me is about connection more than anything, and I love having the opportunity to connect with my customers and other artists through my work.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
We all have unique talents and we are not serving anyone by not sharing them with the world out of fear. I want everyone to feel inspired to share their uniqueness.
