Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Minardi.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Fit City Adventures last fall (September 2018) and have been ramping up, with our official summer kickoff May 18 – May 20. We’re running a “Spin & Swim” class at The Kimpton Solamar downtown on their rooftop with outdoor spin class and Mermaid cardio class in the pool. And then on Sunday we have a volleyball clinic and bonfire in Pacific Beach at Tower 22. It’s a great start to summer.
When I moved to San Diego from Boston three years ago, I was looking for a way to learn the City and live that SoCal life. I wanted to be outside and I was able to try a few new activities each month. The business idea came out of a trip to Morocco, where I was looking for a way to stay active while traveling and decided to bring the concept back home to San Diego – America’s Finest City.
Tourism is a top industry in SD, with more than $10B spent in the industry each year. It’s the perfect City for people to stay active and make memories – all of the fun in the sun, minus the stress. We are a one-stop-shop lifestyle concierge that plans unique experiences on land and sea. From leisure, active and adventure packages, we have more than 30 partners in fitness, health, wellness and adventures in SD county. Our focus is on corporate groups 25 – 200 that are traveling to San Diego for business or companies that are based here looking for fun and different team building activities like volleyball clinics, hikes and surf camps. We also offer a “give back” component where we partner up with local non-profits like I Love Clean San Diego to clean the beaches that we work out on during our events.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
With any new adventure, there will be a learning curve. I took my 15 years in corporate consulting, PR, event planning, marketing, and my business degree along with my love for fitness and outdoor activities to bring this dream to life. It’s not work for me, it’s a passion project. Every day is fun and I get to spend it with amazing people and share my love for this City. The hardest part right now as a solopreneur is how and where to spend my time. It’s easy for me to stay in “sales and service” mode because I “grew up” in marketing and business development, but I also have to spend equal amounts of time on the back-end operations and setting up a very seamless and automated system for my clients and vendor partners. I am hyperfocused on the customer experience.
My biggest advice for young women starting their journey is to just start. You won’t have all of the answers and you need to learn by doing. Try it out, see what sticks. Ask a lot of questions and do your research, but don’t be paralyzed or think you have to have all of the answers. You just won’t, and you’ll make mistakes, but that’s part of learning and growing. Find your passion, find your niche, understand your market, and spend 90% of your time doing things that bring the biggest ROI. Don’t forget that businesses succeed in relationships, so take the time to build and foster those. Remember the little things like hand-written notes and remember to have fun. Surround yourself with role models, mentors and just a team of really smart people. Learn from them, ask for advice, but most importantly get quiet and listen to yourself. More often than not, you know the answer. Trust your instincts.
What should we know about Fit City Adventures? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are San Diego’s premier lifestyle concierge focused on fitness & health. We pride ourselves in partnering with the best gyms, recreation companies, and travel vendors in the City to offer corporate groups a unique experience with custom touches. We have tried all of the services that we refer and have built a strong relationship with the owners and guides. Coming from a corporate background, specifically founding and running the Fit Club at CVS Health with more than 2,000 employee members, I understand corporate budgets and wellness agendas. We offer a way for teams to come together outside of the office, deepen connections, stay healthy and give back to the community. It’s a win-win for the company and its employees.
We create custom itineraries for groups traveling to San Diego or companies based here looking for both onsite and offsite classes or activities. We offer a range of options from leisure to adventure and all ages, including significant others and children. Our focus is highlighting the best that SD has to offer, from beach yoga and bonfires to ocean kayaking with seals. We tailor each outing and put in the special touches from local companies like Blenders sunglasses and snack boxes from The Patio Group and Oh! Vegan. We are hyper-local and uber focused on giving back to the community when possible.
Our brand embodies those sunny SoCal vibes – the logo is a sunset over the Pacific Ocean – something every traveler should experience while they are in San Diego. Fit City Adventures offers options for every explorer with a white glove service. Clients know that when we are handling their event or trip, that every detail will be taken care of and their group will have a blast.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I’m actually not seeing this at all. More than 50% of the company owners, hotel directors or tourism leads that I work with are women. A number of my mentors in San Diego are female leaders in the community. San Diego especially is very supportive of entrepreneurs and women are key contributors to the fitness and health community.
It’s exciting to see this City grow and there is so much potential for new business and new ideas. My goal is to support and promote as many women entrepreneurs as possible and raise each other up along the way. I learn something from everyone that I meet. In general, both the men and women I have met in this City have been genuinely interested in helping me get this business off of the ground and connecting me to others who can accelerate the growth. It’s inspiring and comforting to feel a part of such a welcoming community. Another reason why San Diego is just the best.
